MikeyMP says: Fascinating, unflinching, with a bit of happy coincidence. Willow Chance, a genius who has a hard time making friends at school finds solace in plant friends in her lush garden. When she comes home from school one day to find that her adoptive parents have been killed in a car crash, her whole way of being shuts down; she doesn't even count by 7s any more to calm her mind. A variety of circumstances brings together several characters with various difficulties and/or flaws to rally around keeping Willow out of the DPS system. They all find ways to be their better selves, and Willow begins to heal from her trauma. 10+ (Extremely anxious or sensitive children may have a hard time thinking about what would happen if they came home to find their parents had died in a car accident.) kaylee says: If you are looking for a quirky books that will make you shed a fear tears, here you go! Willow was adopted by wonderful parents who loved her and all her differences. Willow is not just s...mart, but a genius. She has an ability to fix things, learn languages fluently and diagnosis you alignments like House M.D. Her parents are killed in a car accident and Willow finds herself alone in the world. She was an only child with no aunts or uncles, only a grandparent in a nursing home. Now the state is looking to place Willow in foster care. Somehow Willow finds herself living with a young family of Vietnamese heritage not only changing her life, but theirs as well.If you ever read anything by Kathy Reichs or watched the TV show Bones, then you are familiar with character Temperance Brennan. Imagine her a as a twelve year old girl and you have Willow! Willow so very smart, however, she lacked basic social skills and struggled to fit in. She bonded nicely with her adoptive parents, but no one else. After being accused of cheating on a test, she is sent to counseling where she meets Dell, her counselor and also siblings Mai and Quang-ha. What I liked about this book: I loved watching Willow grow from the awkward loner to being loved by many. There were so many wonderful characters in this book! I started out not liking Dell and thinking how lazy and selfish he was, but he too grew. In all honesty this fits the reviews I keep reading as to this not being a book about loss, but a book about growth. Not only does the main character grow, but the secondary ones do too. I also enjoyed reading about Willow’s love of plants. I did learn a bit from this book! What I did not like: The only thing that got to me was the ending and the money situation. I found that a little hard to swallow considering what the set up for these characters were. But it did lead into a happy ending!I will recommending this for my middle grade book club!MoreLessShow More Show Less
Guest 2 years agoExcellent book, filled with complex imagery and forthright symbolism. Perhaps better for young adults. A beautiful example of how humans can join together for a just cause.

Guest 4 years agoMost “hard” books may be a little inappropriate for you. I’m 4 years older than you, and don’t generally read books higher than a fifth grade level. ( ;
