work on it some more later.â Cody executed the save command, jumped out of his chair and rushed past Jane on his way to the bathroom down the hall. Zach got up, as well.
âWait a minute,â Jane said. âWe need to talk.â
Zachâs brows rose, and he sat back down. Jane came into the room, glancing down the hall first, to be sure Cody was out of earshot. Then she took the seat her son had formerly occupied.
âCodyâ¦heâs a special boy.â
âI can see that.â
âHis IQ is far above whatâs considered normal,â she explained. âAnd from what Iâve read about you, I imagine yours is, too.â
He shrugged, saying nothing.
âZach, donât get too close to him.â
He looked confused.
âLook, I donât want to see him get hurt. We both know you have to go back to your own time, eventually. But heâs getting attached to you, I can see that already.â
âAh⦠I see what youâre getting at. But, Jane, Ineed the boyâs help. With the use of this machine, I canââ
âI donât care about the machine, Zach. What I care about is my son.â
âMe, too,â he said softly. And she felt a rush of guilt for objecting so strongly. Even more for what else was on her mind. She sighed, and lowered her head. âI know how important this is to you. I do. Itâs justâ¦heâs never had a father, Zach. And lately, all heâs talked about is wanting one.â
âI understand that,â he said.
âNo, you donât. You canât possibly. Heâsââ
âI understand, Jane.â He sighed, and placed a hand on her shoulder. âBenjamin and Cody have more in common than you know. My Benâ¦heâs never known a motherâs love, and since heâs been ill, itâs all heâs talked about. Wanting a mother. I understand everything youâre saying.â
He did, she realized slowly. She swallowed hard, looking him in the eye. âIâm sorryâ¦about your wife, I mean.â
Zach lowered his head, but not before she saw the bitterness flash in his eyes. She frowned at him. But he shook his head, seemingly eager to change the subject. âThis drug,â he said. âThe one that can cure my son. Do you have any idea where I can obtain it?â
She drew a breath, lifted her chin. âIâve been wanting to talk to you about that. Zachâ¦â
âWe canât get the medicine without a doctor helping us, can we, Mom?â They both turned to see Cody in the doorway, drying his small hands on a towel. âDonât you need a prescription?â
Zachâs eyes met hers, and they were worried. âYes,â she said. âItâs a powerful antibiotic, and a controlled substance. You canât buy it unless a doctor orders it.â
âThen weâll contact a doctor,â Zach said. âWeâll explain, andââ
âAnd heâll have us all tossed into a rubber room,â Jane said. It wasnât a good solution, and maybe it wasnât even a solution at all. More like a delaying tactic. When Zach only frowned, she explained, âHeâll think weâre nuts.â
âThen weâll find another way.â Zachâs eyes were intense.
âWe can look it up on the computer,â Cody said. âFind out how to make the medicine, andââ
Zach shook his head. âWeâd have the same set of problems, though. We donât have the supplies or equipment weâd need to create the drug. And if we didnât get it exactly right, it might not work at all. I canât risk failure.â
Cody stood still, gnawing his lip. âMom? You know how you said it was only okay to tell a lie when you really, really had to?â
She looked at her son through narrowed eyes. âYeah?â
âWell, is it the same with, uhâ¦with stealing?â
âCody!
