flew faster as he came across more and more spots.
âIâve never seen Lurch like this before,â said Zap.
âMe neither,â said Crunch, sounding nervous.
Lurch crawled back towards them, with a very worried look on his face. âGather round,â he whispered.
Zap huddled in close to his Bug Buddies.
âWhy are you whispering?â asked Buzz.
Lurch nodded at a group of yellow butterflies and white moths playing happily nearby. âI know what the spots are,â said the dungbeetle, âand I donât want to scare the whole wood.â
Zapâs tummy did a nervous flip. âItâs Spinner, isnât it?â he said.
âShh!â said Lurch. He nodded slowly. âYes, itâs Spinner. Those dark spots are spider poo.â
Zapâs wings drooped â this was terrible news.
âAre you s-sure?â said Crunch, his big claws clattering together.
âIf thereâs one thing Iâm sure about,â said Lurch, âitâs poo.â
âI knew heâd be back,â said Zap.
âItâs not just Spinner,â said Lurch. âWith this much poo, he must have an army of spiders with him!â
âWe need to tell Gonzo,â said Zap, flapping his wings. âRight now!â
Â
Zap spotted the wise grasshopper sitting on his rock. He landed next to Gonzo, his friends following close behind.
âWeâve got some news for you,â he said gravely. âSpinnerâs back.â
Gonzo nodded his head, slowly. He didnât look surprised.
I wasnât the only one who expected Spinner to return , Zap thought.
âAnd heâs got squillions of other spiders with him,â said Lurch. âThereâs spider poo everywhere.â
âLook â itâs all around your rock,â said Crunch, inspecting the slab that Gonzo was sat on. âWeâre in danger!â
âIf Spinner was going to attack us, heâd have done it by now,â said Gonzo, calmly. âHe must be busy hatching his latest plan.â
âWhat are we going to do?â asked Zap.
Gonzo took a deep breath. âItâs time to end this feud. Ask all our insect friends to meet here when the sun is highest in the sky,â he replied.âIâm going to make the most important speech Spinnerâs Wood has ever heard.â
 Â
Zap and his friends spread the news about Gonzoâs meeting. They visited every friendly bug in the wood, from the earwigs on Rotten Row to the dragonflies over at Soggy Bog.
Zap felt the sun beam down on his wings â it was already high in the sky.
âWe should head back,â he said, âor weâll be the only ones not at the meeting!â
Zap couldnât believe his eyes as he flew into the clearing by Gonzoâs Rock. It was packed! Insects who were usually sworn enemies stood side by side, waiting to hear what Gonzo had to say.
âI never thought Iâd see Mac the caterpillar standing next to Stig the wasp,â said Lurch.
âMe neither,â said Buzz. âThey hate each other!â
Zap found the last clear patch of ground for them to land on. Buzz, Crunch and Lurch crawled to the front. Zap flew upwards, hoveringabove the crowd, as Gonzo hopped on to his rock. All eyes were on the grasshopper.
âFriends,â said Gonzo. âI have bad news. Spinner has returned.â
Zap watched rows of wings shudder with fright.
âBut,â continued Gonzo, âSpinner is now on his last chance. He must be challenged to a showdown. If he wins ⦠then I will leave the wood forever â¦â
âNo!â shouted Zap.
â⦠and let him rule,â finished the grasshopper.
âDonât do it, Gonzo!â
âThis canât be happening!â
Cries filled the clearing and Gonzo lifted his front legs in a plea for quiet.
âIf Spinner loses,â said the grasshopper, âthen he must agree
