changed back into a vampire.
âRemember, donât POP! too loudly or Fangless folk might hear,â she said. âRight, now you all try.â
Lee, Bella, and Billy soon found that changing into a bat wasnât as easy as it looked.
At first, Lee only managed to change his armsâ¦
And Bella changed everything except her headâ¦
Billy changed himself into a cat â¦
and then a rat .
But finally there was a POP! and suddenly Lee was flapping around the room.
âI did it! I did it!â he squeaked. âIâm a bat!â
Chapter 3
Boris the Bat
By lunchtime the classroom was full of little bats giggling with glee.
âWell done, class!â said Miss Gargoyle. âAfter recess weâll practice hanging upside down. Thereâll be a little time before the werewolves arrive for the casketball game.â
At recess Lee and his friends hurried outside. They couldnât wait to practice turning into bats.
It was a lot trickier without Miss Gargoyle there to help. First of all, Leeâs left half became a bat but his right half stayed the sameâ¦
Bella turned into a huge ball of bat furâ¦
And Billy turned into a bag.
But at last they did it. With a POP! POP! POP! they were all fluttering around the playground.
âCome on,â said Bella. âLetâs all play hide-and-seek! Iâll count to twenty.â She shut her eyes.
âOne, two, threeââ
Quick as a flash, Billy darted out of sight. Lee looked around for a hiding place. On a window ledge? No, Bella would spot him too easily.
âFour, five, sixââ
Inside the school trash cans? Poo! Too smelly!
âSeven, eight, nineââ
âAha!â thought Lee. âBehind the school gates!â
But Billy was already hiding there.
âBuzz off, Lee!â he said. âYouâll give us both away!â
âTen, eleven, twelveââ
âYikes!â cried Lee. âThis is harder than I thought!â
âThirteen, fourteen, fifteenââ
DONG! The school clock struck midnight.
âThatâs it!â Lee thought suddenly. âThe clock tower! What better place for a bat to hide than in a belfry?
âSixteen, seventeen, eighteenââ
Lee made it to the tower just as Bella cried, âNineteen, twenty. Ready or not, here I come!â
Lee darted through a hole in the school clockâand bumped straight into another bat.
âHey, watch where youâre going!â said the bat.
âSorry!â said Lee.
He didnât recognize the other bat, so he said, âMy nameâs Lee. Whatâs yours?â
âBoris,â grunted the bat gruffly.
âHi Boris,â smiled Lee. âIâm in Miss Gargoyleâs class. Which class are you in?â
âClass?â snorted Boris. âOh, Iâm not one of you silly vampire kids. Iâm a real bat.â
âA real bat!â gasped Lee. âWow! Cool!â
âThatâs right,â said Boris. âYou vampires think youâre so clever, turning into bats and all. But you canât do half the things a real bat can do. Watch this!â
Boris folded his wings and dropped like a stone, all the way down to the bottom of the tower.
âHey!â yelled Lee in terror. âWatch out!â
Boris was just about to hit the ground when he opened his wings and pulled up at the last moment. He fluttered back up to Lee.
âSee?â said Boris. âNow you go and play with those vampire friends of yours. Belfries are for real bats.â
âBut Iâm supposed to be hiding,â said Lee. âCanât I stay for a while? Iâd love to learn some real bat tricks. Theyâre so cool!â
Boris shrugged. âWell, all right. Just for a little while though. I donât want any of my friends to think I hang out with vampires.â
Lee was delighted. With Boris to help he tried
