anybody.â
âWho would I tell?â Ava asked.
âUm . . . everybody?â
âI wouldnât do that,â Ava said.
âThen swear on something.â
âCross my heart and swear on my evil eye earrings.â Ava leaned forward eagerly. âOkay, so tell me. Spill the beans, girlfriend.â
âAfter Babcock dropped me off last night. After he pulled over to the curb, barely slowed the car, and practically pushed me out into the gutter . . . I was hurrying to my apartment . . .â
Ava gave an encouraging nod. âYeeees.â
âAnd . . . well . . . Quigg was kind of hiding in the courtyard waiting for me.â
Ava grinned. âLook at you, hot momma. Juggling two guys at once. Back in the day I used to do that myself. You know, Iâd line up two, maybe three dates in one night. Cocktail hour, then dinner, then a late-night rendezvous. Lately Iâve been trying to cut back.â
âAva, stop. This wasnât any kind of date. Quigg was just lurking there. Totally unbeknownst to me.â
âHe was just . . . waiting for you? Why,
cher
?â
âHe wanted to talk about the murder. He was wondering if Iâd found out anything new.â
âBut you havenât.â Ava took a quick sip of wine. âHave you?â
âNot really. I had no real news for Quigg. Aside from the fact that Babcock is suspicious about how he waved a magic wand and had Martin Lashâs reviews taken down from the Glutton for Punishment website.â
Ava cocked her head. âThatâs all very interesting. But none of that explains why a man was standing at your front door in the wee hours of the morning.â She wiggled her fingers. âSo what really happened?â
Carmela had sipped just enough champagne to loosen her tongue. âI kissed him.â
Ava gasped.
âI mean . . . he kissed me first. And then I just couldnât help myself.â
âGirl, you are so walking a thin, red line.â
âI know that!â
Ava dimpled. âSo give me all the details.â
âThere are no details. It was just a simple kiss.â
âSimple?â Ava smirked. âA kiss with a man like Quigg Brevard is never simple. You should know that.â
âWhich is why this whole thing is quite complicated.â
âOf course it is,â Ava said. âBut the big question is, what are you going to do about it?â
âI have to do something?â Carmela asked. âWhat would I do? Jeez, Ava, all I want right now is for the kiss to have never happened.â
âItâs too late,â Ava warned. âThat kiss is out there in the ozone. Itâs like posting a bad selfieâitâll never go away.â
âSo what do you suggest I do?â
âYou actually have several options. You can avoid Quigg for the rest of your natural-born days. You can confess your infidelity to Babcock and beg for forgiveness. Or you can live with this secret locked in your heart forever. Personally, the option Iâd go for would be to kiss him again.â
âHave you lost your mind?â Carmela cried, so loudly that a couple of people turned to stare. âKiss him again?â She lowered her voice. âBabcock would kill us both. And because heâs a smart detective who carries a gun, he would probably get away with murder.â She picked up her menu and waggled a finger at the waiter. âAh, forget it. Letâs just order.â
They did order. Eggs Benedict for Carmela and eggs Sardou for Ava. Then Carmela sat and stared into the garden for a few minutes, deep in thought.
âYou okay?â Ava asked.
âI donât know what to do.â
Ava picked up the bottle of champagne. âHave another drink, sweetie. Champagne makes everything better.â
