wasnât hurt.â
I let out a gasp just thinking about what Iâd do to any of my children if they raised a hand to one of their teachers. âI canât believe Joshua did that! Youâve raised him better than that.â
âWell, that witch shouldnât have put her hands on my son. They did away with corporal punishment for a reason. So that these racist teachers canât put their hands on our kids.â
Now, I know Ms. Golden. I worked on the PTA with her, and both Cicely and Gretchen had her for fifth grade. She is a tough-as-nails woman who is somewhat old school. She doesnât tolerate back talk, and she makes the children say âNo, maâamâ and âYes, maâam.â She is a great teacher and is not racist at all. Even though she works in our well-to-do suburb, she volunteers every year tutoring reading students in the urban school districts.
âI never thought Ms. Golden was racist, Taylor.â
âWell, she is. She doesnât like black boys. You have girls, so maybe thatâs why you havenât experienced it yet. You better hope TJ doesnât have her when he gets in fifth grade. Hopefully, she will have retired by then.â
âThey havenât filed any charges, have they? Heâs just a little boy.â
âGirl, they talking about assault, but weâre going to fight it. Right now weâve got to worry about where Joshuaâs going to go to school. They expelled him.â
âOh my Lord, Taylor, Iâm so sorry. Do you think if he apologizes to the teacher that theyâd overturn the decision?â
âApologize? He didnât do anything but defend himself. She shouldnât have put her hands on my son.â
I canât believe what Iâm hearing. I know that Taylor overindulges Joshua a little bit. I thought that it was just because it was only the two of them for so long. I hoped that once Spencer came into their lives, she would be a little bit more balanced about that boy.
âWhat are you gonna do, then?â
âFor now Iâm going to homeschool him.â
âWhat about your job?â
âIâm taking a leave of absence. Spencer makes more than enough money to take care of us, and weâve been stacking most of my checks for years. Weâll be fine if I take some time off to get my son back on track.â
âWhat did Spencer say about you leaving work?â
Another loud sigh from Taylor. âHe basically said that all of this is my fault. Heâs wanted to punish Joshua for his other outbursts, but I donât allow that. Heâs not hitting my son. So he said I might as well handle it.â
This is a touchy subject, and I donât even know if our friendship can withstand me telling Taylor how I really feel about this. I think Joshua couldâve used a good spanking a couple of times, but I donât think she believes in spanking. I can understand why she doesnât want Spencer to touch him, but I also know how much Spencer loves them both.
âMaybe Spencerâs method is not such a bad idea.â
âYou sound like Yvonne.â
âSee . . .â
âNeither of you has been a single mother, so you have no idea what Iâm going through.â
âBut youâre not a single mother anymore.â
Taylor clears her throat. âYou just worry about getting that book published, huh? Weâre all looking for a reason to celebrate, so letâs get it poppinâ, girlfriend.â
âOkay, Taylor, you can avoid the issue for now, but weâre not done with this conversation.â
âIâm not avoiding anything. Iâm just done talking about it. I didnât ask for advice, Pam.â
âYouâre right. Iâm sorry.â
âDonât be. Itâs what you do. I know where to find you when I need you.â
I can hear the smile in Taylorâs voice, and I know she doesnât mean to
