âAre you sure you want to get involved in something likeââ
âMy mind is made upâIâm going.â Emma looked longingly at Cassidy. âItâs just that, well, I donât want to go alone.â
Cassidy looked uneasy. âYou want me to go with you?â
Emma nodded eagerly. âWill you?â
âDo you really believe thatâthat someone set Felicia up like that? That sheâs not the one who did it to herself?â
âI know I could be wrong,â Emma confessed, âbut Iâd rather go talk to her and be wrong than to ignore this hunch and be right.â
âYeah . . . I can understand that.â
âSo will you go with me to see her?â
âWhen?â
âHow about tomorrow morning? Not too early. Ten-ish?â
Cassidy pressed her lips together and Emma could tell she was torn. âOkay,â she said finally. âIâll go too.â
âThank you!â Emma exclaimed gratefully. âI just have to get to the bottom of this. One way or another I want to know the truth, Cass.â
âI know you do.â Cassidy sighed. âI guess I do too now.â
By 10:00 the next morning, Emma was having second thoughts. Maybe this was crazy. Really, was she going to just go up and knock on Feliciaâs door? And then what? What would she say? What would she do? What if Felicia didnât want to talk? Or what if Felicia admitted she really had been the one behind all of it? Well, at least that would be the end of it, and then Emma could just put it all out of her mind.
âReady to do this?â Cassidy asked as Emma got into her car.
âAs ready as Iâll ever be.â
âDo you know what youâre going to say?â
âKind of.â
âWell, Iâve been praying about this,â Cassidy said as she drove. âAsking God to help us.â
âThanks.â
Before long they were parked in front of Feliciaâs house. It was similar to Emmaâs house, except that it was in better condition. Like someone there cared. âI looked up their address online last night,â Emma told Cassidy. âIâm pretty sure the Ruez family still lives here.â She took in a deep breath. âLetâs do this.â
A woman who looked like an older version of Felicia answered the door. She had on a dark blue jogging suit and white athletic shoes. âHello?â She peered curiously at them. âAre you selling something?â
âWe came to see Felicia,â Emma told her.
The woman narrowed her dark eyes. âWhat for?â
âWeâre worried about her,â Emma said.
âWhy?â the woman demanded.
âWeâre from Northwood,â Cassidy said quickly. âWe want to make sure sheâs doing okay.â
The womanâs features softened slightly. âFelicia is not okay.â
âCan we talk to her?â Emma asked.
âWho is it, Mom?â a voice called from behind the door.
âFriends. I think.â The woman scowled. âFrom your school.â
The door swung open wide, and Felicia appeared with a dark look and her hands planted on her hips like she was ready for a fight. âOh? Emma? And Cassidy?â She looked confused. âWhat are you doing here?â
âWe want to talk with you,â Emma said.
âAre these the ones who did this to you?â Feliciaâs mother demanded. âThe girls that put that nastyââ
âNo!â Cassidy exclaimed. âNo way.â
âAbsolutely not,â Emma added.
âCome on.â Felicia grabbed their hands and tugged. âCome to my room to talk.â
Once they were sequestered in Feliciaâs room, Emma jumped in. âI want to know the truth,â she said. âDid you really put that stuff on MyPlace? Or did someone else do it to hurt you?â
âOf course someone else posted it!â Felicia said quickly.
