left it at the store.â
âI did?â Shane thought about it a moment, then laughed. âOh, thatâs right. Thanks. Whoâs minding the store while youâre out making deliveries?â Turning, she popped the can into a cupboard.
âDave.â With a sigh, Donna plopped onto a kitchen chair. âHis sisterâs babysitting, so he kicked me out.â
âAw, out in the storm.â
âHe knew I was restless.â She glanced out the window. âIt doesnât seem as though this rainâs ever going to let up.â With a shiver, she frowned at Shaneâs bare feet. âArenât you cold?â
âI thought about starting a fire,â she said absently, then grinned. âIt seemed like an awful lot of trouble.â
âSoâs the flu.â
âThe cocoaâs still warm,â Shane told her, automatically reaching for another cup. âWant some?â
âYes, thanks.â Donna ran her fingers through her hair again, then folded her hands, but she couldnât keep them still. Suddenly, she gave Shane a glowing smile. âI have to tell you before I burst.â
Mildly curious, Shane looked over her shoulder. âTell me what?â
âIâm having another baby.â
âOh, Donna, thatâs wonderful!â Shane felt a twinge of envy. Hurriedly dismissing it, she went to hug her friend. âWhen?â
âNot for another seven months.â Laughing, Donna wiped the rain from her face. âIâm just as excited as I was the first time. Dave is too, though heâs trying to be very nonchalant.â She sent Shane a beaming look. âHeâs managed to mention it, very casually, to everyone who came into the store this afternoon.â
Shane gave her another quick hug. âYou know how lucky you are?â
âYes, I do.â A little sheepishly, she grinned. âIâve spent all day thinking up names. What do you think of Charlotte and Samuel?â
âVery distinguished.â Shane moved back to the stove. After pouring cocoa, she brought two cups to the table. âHereâs to little Charlotte or Samuel.â
âOr Andrew or Justine,â Donna said as they touched rims.
âHow many kids are you planning to have?â Shane asked wryly.
âJust one at a time.â Donna gave her stomach a proud little pat.
The gesture made Shane smile. âDid you say Daveâs sister was watching Benji? Isnât she still in school?â
âNo, she graduated this summer. Right now sheâs hunting for a new job.â With a contented sigh, Donna sat back. âShe was planning to go to college part-time, but moneyâs tight and the hours sheâs working right now make it next to impossible.â Her brow creased in sympathy. âThe best she can manage this term is a couple of night classes twice a week. At that rate itâs going to take her a long time to earn a degree.â
âHmm.â Shane stared into her cocoa. âPat was a very bright girl as I remember.â
âBright and pretty as a picture.â
Shane nodded. âTell her to come see me.â
âYou?â
âAfter the shopâs set up, Iâm going to need some part-time help.â She glanced over absently as the wind hurled rain at the windows. âI wouldnât be able to do anything for her for a month or so, but if sheâs still interested, we should be able to work something out.â
âShane, sheâll be thrilled. But are you sure you can afford to hire someone?â
With a toss of her head, Shane lifted her drink. âIâll know within the first six months if Iâm going to make it.â As she considered, she twisted a curl around her fingerâa gesture Donna recognized as nerves. She drew her brows together but said nothing. âI want to keep the place open seven days a week,â Shane continued. âWeekends are bound to
