picked up the carafe and poured the dark brew into his mug that read âMy Dad Rocks!ââÂa gift from Devon for Fatherâs DayâÂshe said, âI was surprised by your announcement last night about Bobby.â
He shrugged. âNeed to get him a job doing something. Figured why not?â
âDo you think he can handle it?â
âNo idea.â He took a sip. âMay take him a while to get up to speed, but I do need the help, and heâs the only one in town not already wearing six hats.â
âTrue.â
âHeâs supposed to let me know this morning whether heâs going to take me up on the offer.â He checked his watch. âTold him to be here at eight sharp.â It was seven thirty.
âIâll keep my fingers crossed.â
âLilâs over at the school with Jack, trying to find a room for the library. Said to tell you sheâd be in as soon as they were done.â
âOkay.â
They spent a few more minutes talking about their individual agendas for the day. Just as Trent was preparing to head down the hall to his own office, Bobby appeared.
âMorning,â he said.
âGood morning,â Trent replied, pleased.
Bernadine echoed his greeting. She looked pleased as well.
âIâm ready to go to work,â Bobby said.
âThen grab some coffee if you want, and letâs get going.â
It turned out that the young man wasnât a coffee drinker, so with a departing nod to Bernadine, he followed Trent out to begin his first day.
âGlad you decided to take the offer,â Trent said, watching him over his cup as he hung his coat on the free-Âstanding rack.
âDidnât make sense not to. This is why Kiki and I moved here.â
âEver read a blueprint?
âNo.â
âThen weâll start with that.â
Trent was explaining the basics when Mal walked in. His face was somber, and Trent could have sworn heâd been crying. âDad? You okay?â
âYeah.â
Trentâs first thought was Tamar. Had something happened? Was she hurt? He willed himself to remain calm. âTamar okay?â
âYeah, sheâs fine. Need to talk to you.â Mal nodded at Bobby. Theyâd met last night after the meeting. âMorning, Bobby.â
âMorning, Mr. July.â
âTrent, can you come out into the hall for a minute?â
âSure.â His confusion was high. Excusing himself, he followed his dad.
Out in the hallway, Mal asked, âIs there someplace private where we can talk?â
âDad, whatâs going on?â
âYour motherâs here.â
Trent froze, studying his fatherâs face for signs of joking. âNot funny.â
âNo, it isnât. Sheâs out at Tamarâs. I just talked with Rita. Came to get you.â
A million questions screamed in his head. He drew in a deep breath, hoping it would slow his racing heart. âLet me send Bobby home.â Stunned, he walked back into the office.
Bobby took one look at his face and asked, âYou okay, man?â
Trentâs brain was stuck on Your motherâs here. âNo. I mean yeah, but I need to talk to my dad. Take the day off. Iâll probably be tied up most of the day.â
âEverybody okay? Your wife, kids, Tamar?â
Trent nodded. âYeah. Just something needing my attention. Iâll pay you for the full day. Go on home. Iâll give you a call later.â
Still viewing him with concern, Bobby put on his coat. âIf you need anything, let me know.â
âI will.â
After Bobby had gone, Mal stepped back in and closed the door.
âSo why is she here after all this time?â Trent asked. The bitterness of being abandoned crept up even as he fought to keep it from claiming him. âDoes she want forgiveness? Money? A kidney?â The sadness in Malâs eyes was something heâd rarely seen, and it
