asked, fearful.
    "No," came the dual response.
"Do you two intend to steal the locket?"
    "No."
Sighing, she walked over to the living room table and dropped the gold heart and chain on it with a loud clunk.
Lydia and Emma jumped, startled, and looked around - before noticing she was in the living room already. They'd agreed to the questioning, but they both still looked worried.
Gwen sat on the cushy chair, and Lydia and Emma sat on the couch.
All three stared down at the locket.
It lay quietly on the table, feigning innocence.
"That locket made me do some messed up things," Emma admitted first.
"I friggin' kidnapped people," Lydia responded, her eyes wide.
Gwen screwed her face up. "I made a girl eat me out in a supermarket aisle, and fucked a coffee shop girl in a drive-through window."
Lydia laughed. "Like, in the drive-through window?"
    Gwen nodded, forlorn.
Emma stared. "And you got away with it?"
"I don't know," Gwen replied. "What would they say? Officer, some woman fucked our co-worker with a strap-on as she hung out the coffee shop window…"
The tense mood broke as all thr ee women burst out laughing, their moods fragile from nervousness.
Almost unable to breath e from her red-faced fit of laughter, Emma went to the kitchen. "I'll get us some drinks."
Lydia laid the book out on the table, and they gathered around, sitting close on the floor and sipping wine.
Sidled up against the object of her utmost fantasy, Gwen couldn't help but grow a little heated. She wondered if either woman noticed her subtle sidelong glances.
"What about this passage?" Lydia asked, seemingly oblivious.
Emma raised her eyebrows. "It's pretty cryptic. It could mean anything."
"Didn't you read this before you used the locket?"
"Sort of," she shrugged. "It's really wordy and obscure."
    "True."
They combed each page of the book for the next half-hour, before Gwen finally sighted something promising. "Look, right there."
Lydia read it out loud. "It can only be given up by someone who truly does not desire. What's that mean?"
Gwen sighed, finished off her glass, and then spoke. "I tried to break it. Even put it under the wheel of my car and backed over it. But you know… I didn't really want to destroy it. How could I? You can do anything with it. Get anything you want. Part of me was glad it was unharmed by all that."
"That makes sense," Emma replied, distant. "That means we can't get rid of it, then. We'll have to hide it or something. And which of us won't just run to the hiding spot and get it out the moment there's any problem in our lives?"
None of the three spoke, each thinking about their own failures to resist using the locket's power.
Gwen's thoughts dwelled on Hanna's reaction to her blundering fantasies. Had her old best friend been right? Was she just fooling around and high on doing whatever she wanted? The more she thought about Hanna's words, the more she realized she'd been indulging her every whim without any consequences. Hanna lived her consequences, had real relationships…
And none of them would have real relationships as long as the locket remained in their lives.
Emma refilled their glasses, and they began commiserating about everything they'd been through.
"The thing is," Gwen said, shaking her head after a heady sip. "That power available to us won't let us live normally. Real life is full of hardships. Nothing matters if you can just have whatever you want."
Lydia agreed with an emphatic noise. "What can we do?" She took a long gulp of wine.
"Watch each other, I guess," she replied, her tone forlorn. "Hiding it is pointless. We can't destroy it. All we can do is deal with it like it's an addiction. Keep each other from using."
Emma laughed. "Sounds like you're talking about a drug."
    "Aren't I? Power is intoxicating."
    " Wow, fair point."
They stared down at the locket again for awhile.
"So… you're alright with what happened?" Emma suddenly asked. "I was all like… leather dominatrix
