girls here tonight. You have this air of confidence they don’t. Aren’t you even attracted to me a little?”
The question almost made Emerald laugh out loud, but she caught herself in time. Chance wanted to know if she liked him. Her heart wouldn’t be able to take much more. He was driving her crazy with his surprise touches here and there all over her body.
“Of course, what girl on campus doesn’t like Chance Cutter? You’re the most popular guy here.”
Chance stopped dancing causing her to fall into him. “I’m not talking about them; I want to know about you. When I saw you across the room I felt compelled to come over. I hated hearing my fraternity brothers sizing you up. I didn’t even know your name, but I had this need to keep them away from you. Does that sound crazy to you?”
The sincere look on Chance’s face made Emerald stop for a moment and look into Chance’s eyes and his unblinking stare. He was serious! He really wanted to know what she thought about him without knowing who she even was.
“Why is my opinion so important? We barely know each other. It’s highly unlikely that we’ll see each other again after tonight. I’m like Cinderella and at the stroke of midnight I’ll be gone and you’ll move on to the next girl.”
Sadly, Chance wouldn’t be intrigued with the real her after all of the fantasy she had going on tonight was gone.
“You don’t know that,” Chance told her. “I feel something with you.”
“Sure you do.” Emerald laughed. She wondered how many times Chance had used this same line on other female students at the college.
“No, I mean it. Come up to my room. I want to talk to you without all of this noise and other people around us.”
Wait a minute !
Her going up to Chance’s bedroom was a very bad idea; she could barely resist him on the dance floor. His pull would be even stronger inside his own private domain.
“No, I should really be leaving.” Emerald took a step back from Chance and turned to leave.
Wrapping his hand around her waist, Chance tugged her back to him, spun her around and then kissed her. The warm, firm touch of Chance’s mouth against Emerald’s sent her mind into a tailspin. She couldn’t think about anything else but how good his lips felt. He ran his tongue along the bottom of her lip, and then moved it to the corner of her mouth.
“Say you’ll go upstairs with me. We don’t have to do anything but talk. Just agree... please ,” he whispered right below her ear.
When would she ever get an opportunity like this again? Emerald already knew her answer before the words left her mouth.
“Alright, I’ll go with you,” she said softly as Chance’s handsome face split into a huge grin.
“Thank you. I promise that you won’t regret it.” Taking her by the hand, Chance weaved them through the party and upstairs to his bedroom around the corner and totally out of the way of the party-goers downstairs.
“Here we are.” Chance opened the door and tugged her inside behind him.
Chapter Fourteen
Emerald walked around Chance’s bedroom trying to take in everything that she could. Tonight was going to be a rare occasion and she wanted to burn it into her memory.
“You really look beautiful in that dress,” Chance said from behind her. “But I still feel like I’m at a disadvantage that you know my name and I’m still oblivious to yours.”
“I want to stay mysterious. I think it makes me more intriguing to you.” Spinning back around, she stared at Chance from across the room. “Don’t you like a little mystery in your girls?”
“I love the hunt like any other guy, but I want to call you something when I kiss you again.”
Emerald tried to contain her excitement. Chance wanted to kiss her again. How was it possible her crush liked her as equally as she was into him? This night was turning out to be better and better.
“Sweetheart is fine.” She had always wanted to hear a cute guy call her
