genuinely startled him, and a smile immediately lit his eyes. Her stomach began to hurt.
âAlmost finished,â he said. âWeâve just to transfer the stuff from your old computer. Itâs on this disk for nowâyou can keep it as a backup.â He tossed down his screwdriver and bent to plug in the new computer. It started up immediately.
âThat was quick!â She felt almost panicked that he was almost done, with no further reason to stay.
He sat, connecting her old mouse and keyboard to the new computer. âIâll get the operating system up and running, sort you out with antivirus software and so on.â
âThanks,â she said in relief.
His mouse hand moved, clicking. Then both hands flew across the keyboard. He didnât look at them, but at the screen. âMet Aidan on the way in. I was surprised he didnât evict your guest in the top flat.â Briefly, his gaze lifted to hers, then returned to the screen. âI canât imagine heâs comfortable with such a character so close to you and your parents.â
âI imagine Ronâs card is marked,â Louise said defensively.
Thierry clicked on something and pushed the mouse away before sitting back and regarding her. Louiseâs stomach twisted. She couldnât play this bloody game of Aidanâs.
âAidan discovered who he was,â she blurted. âHeâs giving him a chance to do his job.â
Thierryâs eyes didnât blink. âWhich is?â
âHe does work for an insurance company.â Louise came farther into the room, leaned her hips against the edge of the desk. Just looking at him made her heart race; getting this close to him probably wasnât smart, but she needed to see his reactions.
âWhich one?â Thierry asked evenly.
âLondon and Scottish Life. They employ him as a private investigator.â
Thierry nodded. âI wondered if that was it.â
âWhy would he be investigating you? Searching your caravan?â
Thierry shrugged and glanced at the screen. Casually, he clicked a couple of things. âI imagine he believes I still have his employerâs money.â
âDo you?â she asked steadily.
A smile flickered across his lips and vanished. âGod, no.â
It seemed so natural that her heart rejoiced. Her head, however, remained unconvinced. âThen why would he waste his time up here investigating you?â she demanded.
Thierry shrugged. âMaybe itâs easier to blame new frauds on me. Maybe he just likes fishing and Iâm an excuse. Heâll be paid by the hour, not by results.â
âNew frauds?â she pounced. âThen heâs not looking for the money you went to prison for?â
âI gave that back,â Thierry said, and returned to the computer screen.
âYou told me you only gave most of it back.â
âThe rest is accounted for.â He concentrated on the screen, although there didnât seem to be anything to see apart from a bar proclaiming the percentage of download completed.
Louise threw what was left of her caution out the window. âThierry,â she pleaded. âPlease tell me you havenât done anything that could endanger you or Ardknocken House.â
âOf course I havenât. Glenn is my friend.â There was an edge to his voice at last, but it didnât please her. âAnd I like it here. Is Friday off now?â
Unexpectedly, his eyes pinned her, almost like Aidanâs did when he was determined to get an answer.
âNot unless youâre crapping out,â she said steadily. She thought she read something like relief before his eyelids lowered and his attention reverted to the screen. âBut I want to know why Ron suspects you. And I think you know.â
His lips quirked slightly, but it was several moments before he turned his head and met her gaze. âMaybe. I might tell you on
