associate club members, but heâs also Mary Anneâs boyfriend, remember?)
Mary Anne took the receiver, faced herself into a corner of the room, and began talking so quietly that none of us could hear her, no matter how far we leaned over. Every so often a little murmur would come from her direction, but no actual words.
When she finally hung up, she turned back to us, blushing, and said, âLogan says hello. He just wanted to know what was going on. He said he might want a signing lesson sometime, Jessi. In case he ever sits for the Braddocks.â
âWhat else did he say?â Claudia teased, looking at Mary Anneâs red face.
(I feel sorry for anyone who blushes so easily.)
âOh ⦠not much.â
We started talking about our families then. We do that sometimes, when weâre not lining up jobs or talking about club business. We sort of take turns saying whatâs going on in our lives.
âMy brother called from California last night,â said Dawn. âHeâs still really happy out there.â
âYou think heâll stay?â asked Kristy.
âIâm pretty sure. When the six months are up, the lawyers and everyone have to get together again to discuss the trial period â but I know heâll stay.â
I couldnât imagine my family being torn in half like Dawnâs had been. I just couldnât. What would I do if Squirt and Daddy were living in California?
âTigger learned how to fetch yesterday,â said Mary Anne. âHave you ever known a kitten that could fetch?â
âYouâre just trying to distract us from Logan,â said Dawn with a smile.
âYouâre absolutely right,â agreed Mary Anne.
âWell, hereâs something thatâs been going on at my house,â said Kristy. âI find this hard to believe, but Mom has been mooning around saying she wants a baby.â
âA baby ?!â the rest of us shrieked.
Kristy nodded, looking puzzled.
âIs she pregnant?â asked Claudia.
âNope,â said Kristy. âI know that for a fact because sheâs also been saying she wishes she were pregnant, but she thinks sheâs too old. After all, Charlie is seventeen.â
âYeah, but how oldâs your mom?â asked Dawn.
âI donât know. Thirty-seven or something.â
âThen she could still get pregnant.â
âReally?â
âSure.â
âHmm.â
Ring-ring.
âHey, one of you guys want to get the phone?â asked Kristy, looking down at Mal and me.
âSure!â we cried. We both leaped up.
âOnly one of you can answer it,â said Claudia. âTrust me. In the old days, the four of us always used to try answering the phone at the same time and it never worked.â
I might be more agile than Mal, but sheâd been sitting closer to the phone, so she reached it before I did. I plopped back down on the floor with a disappointed âHmphh.â
âHello, Baby-sitters Club,â said Mal professionally. She sounded good and she knew it. âOh, yes. Hi, Mrs. Braddockâ¦. Tell her what? ⦠Oh, okay. Sureâ¦. Bye.â
Mallory hung up the phone and turned to me quizzically. âThat was Mattâs mother. She said to give you a message: Everything is arranged.â
âIt is?!â I cried. âOh, thatâs great. Really great!â
âAre you going to let us in on this?â asked Kristy.
âYeah,â said Mary Anne. âWhatâs arranged?â
I hesitated. âI canât tell you. I mean, I canât tell you yet. But Iâll be able to soonâ¦. Really, I promise,â I added when I saw their frowning faces.
âHow come you canât tell us now?â asked Mal.
âI just canât, thatâs all. But I do want to ask you something â all of you. I was wondering if youâd like to come see Coppélia . Everyone in the cast gets ten
