fire,â Leah said.
âSo I look like a skank?â
âNo,â my friends both assured me at the same time.
âYou look like you want guys to notice you,â Leah said. âBut we all do, right? Thatâs the whole point of going to a party. To hook up with guys.â
âRight.â
âAnd tonight is all about getting you with Brad.â
I stared at my reflection in the mirror. Was it?
âRight?â Allie asked, as though reading my mind.
âRight.â
âSo whatâs up with you and Joe?â she asked.
âWhy would you think there was anything?â I picked up my brush and started dragging it through my hair. It created static electricity, causing the strands to start flying around my head like Medusaâs snakes. I should have left well enough alone.
âMaybe the fact that you came in with him before supper and you were both laughing and breathless.â
âLaughing leaves you breathless.â
âYour cheeks were flushed.â
âThey were cold. Besides, I told you. He stayed and helped during the rush at the hot chocolate counter.â
âI think he likes you,â Allie said.
âHe likes someone, but I donât think itâs me. He kinda mentioned her today.â I spun around. âSpeaking of kinda liking someone, this morning Aunt Sue told me that she was once in love.â
Leah and Allie smiled as though Iâd shared the secret of the century, their eyes huge. âReally? Who is he?â
âI donât know. She wouldnât say. She thoughtshe was going to marry him.â
âWhat happened?â Allie asked.
âI donât know. Like I said. She wouldnât say. She was her usual mysterious self.â
âIâll bet thereâs a picture of him hanging somewhere in her store.â
I stared at Allie. I hadnât thought of that. A lot of the photos did have guys in them. âIâll bet youâre right. Iâve looked at all of them, but not that closely.â
âTomorrow weâll have to go on a hunt through the shop, study all the photos, and see if we can figure out who he was,â Leah said.
âIâll bet he was hot,â Allie said. âHe had to be hot.â
âMaybe he was an artic explorer,â Leah said.
âIn which case heâd be cold,â I said.
âLame, Kate!â Leah shouted.
We were still laughing when we stepped into the living room, ready to go.
And came up short.
Had my stupid brother actually styled his dark hair? And what was this? A button-up shirt? Guess he was hoping to hook up with someone at the party as well. Whoever he endedup with would have my deepest sympathy.
âWhatâs that stink?â I asked.
âItâs some fancy aftershave,â Sam said, jerking his head to the side.
Thatâs when I noticed Joe standing there, grimacing. I grimaced, too. I thought Iâd been insulting Sam. Apparently another miscalculation on my part.
âMoves, by Adidas,â Joe mumbled.
âAnd weâre all planning to make some moves tonight,â Sam said. âLetâs go.â
âWhat about Brad?â I asked.
âHe already went to get Cyn. Theyâll meet us there.â
I did my best to hide my disappointment, but since Brad had joined us for supper, Iâd mistakenly thought he was back over playing with us. Why didnât he just move next door already?
We all grabbed our jackets and stuffed our bodies into them while heading to the door.
âAre you driving?â I asked Sam.
âNope. I plan to do some drinking,â Sam said.
âYouâre not old enough,â I reminded him.
âNever stopped me before.â
âSam!â
He halted and glared at me. âWhat? You gonna tattle to Mom and Dad?â
Was I? No. But he didnât know that. Besides, as irritating as my brother was, he was good for one thing: blackmail. And it was payback
