slip knot, so Spud wouldnât rattle around in that trailer like a dry bean in the bottom of a tin bucket.
âThereâll be fireworks later,â Jesse observed. âLots of noise. Maybe we ought to take old Seabiscuit here out to the Triple M right now. Get him settled into a stall.â
âI donât imagine heâs too skittish,â Keegan observed. âNot after carrying a lot of screaming, kicking kids around in circles for who knows how many years.â
âKeeg,â Jesse said.
Keegan didnât look at him. Didnât answer.
âYouâre taking it pretty hardâPsycheâs being so sick, I mean.â
Keegan felt his backbone stiffen. âI guess Myrna told you that, too.â
âNobody had to tell me, Keeg.â
He and Rance and Jesse had grown up together, like pups from a barn litter. They didnât have many secrets from each other.
âIâll be all right,â Keegan said, stepping out of the trailer to join Jesse in the road. He put the ramp up again, closed and fastened the doors. âOnce I get over the shock.â
He would be all right, he knew.
But Psyche wouldnât.
And Lucas might not be, either.
Jesse regarded him silently in the dim glow of a streetlight. Carnival music played, and the Ferris wheel turned, and little kids shrieked with delight on the spinning cars on the spider ride.
âIâll be all right,â Keegan repeated.
Jesse rested a hand on his shoulder. âI know,â he said. âBut the meantime is bound to be hard.â
Keegan swallowed, nodded. Again, he didnât trust himself to talk.
âWeâll be here, Keeg,â Jesse told him. âRance and me.â
Keegan was counting on that, though he couldnât say so.
âMcKettrick-tough,â Jesse said. It was one of a dozen such phrases, drilled into them from the time they could understand the spoken word.
âMcKettrick-tough,â Keegan confirmed.
CHAPTER
5
P SYCHE SAT ALONE under a tree, with Lucas snoozing on a blanket nearby. Seeing Keegan returning with Jesse, she beckoned.
Keeganâs heart turned over. She was so brave. By comparison, he felt like a sniveling yellow-belly.
Nonetheless, he approached. Jesse immediately bent and kissed Psycheâs cheek. âHey, beautiful,â he said. âWelcome home.â
She smiled. âI hear congratulations are in order,â she replied. âThe uncatchable Jesse McKettrick has been caught.â
Jesse chuckled, nodded. âSnagged, bagged and tagged,â he said.
âIâd like to meet your wife,â Psyche told him. âI promise I wonât tell her what a rounder youâve always been.â
Jesse flashed that famous grin. âI think she suspects,â he replied. âIâll go find her.â With that, he slapped Keegan once on the shoulder and walked away.
âSit down, Keegan,â Psyche said.
He sat cross-legged in the fragrant grass.
âYou and Molly look wonderful together,â Psyche remarked, probably trying to be subtle.
Keegan had known Psyche all his life, and he knew instantly what she was getting at. âNo possible way,â he said. âForget it.â
âForget what?â Psyche asked innocently.
âYou know damn well what,â Keegan answered.
She grinned. âOkay, so I thought it would be nice if you and Molly fell in love and got married. Lucas would have a real family thenâheâd be a McKettrick. I can just picture all of you beaming out of one of those photo Christmas cardsââHappy Holidays from the Four of Us.ââ
âLucas can be a McKettrick,â Keegan said. âAll you have to do is let me adopt him, instead of Molly.â
Psyche sighed. âIt would be much simpler if you married Molly, and the two of you adopted him together.â
âI had one cheating wife,â Keegan retorted, without intending to. âI donât
