Benedick is still waving.
âIâm serious!â Claudio insists.
âOK, if you must know, I think Heroâs too short â I prefer tall girls. And sheâs dark â I prefer blondes. Apart from that, yeah â sheâs hot. Though I still donât give her more than seven out of ten.â
âIâm not kidding, Ben. Tell me what you
really
think.â
âWhy? Is she on the market?â
Claudio leans forward in his seat. âYou donât talk that way about a girl like Hero!â
At last Benedick stops waving to give the kid the benefit of his wide experience. âSince you scored the winning goal, you can get any girl you want â and donât look at me like I said something you didnât already know!â
âOK, but I still say Heroâs different. Nicer, sweeter, prettierâ¦â
âYouâre kidding. Are we talking about the same woman? Now take her cousin, Beatrice. If sheâd just keep her mouth shut, youâd soon realise sheâs way above Hero in the looks department. Anyhow, youâre not thinking of making a move in Heroâs direction, I hope.â
I notice thereâs a long silence between the question and Claudioâs answer.
âI guess thatâs a yes,â the striker finally admits.
Just then, the bus driver puts on the brakes. We have arrived at Leonatoâs villa.
âWhat am I hearing?â Benedick cries. âAnd what has happened to my new drinking buddy? You do realise that youâre putting your head right into the noose?â He means it. Thereâs a long pause, and then he adds, âJust donât come running to me when youâre bored. Hey, Pedro, listen to this!â
The team coach is about to get off the bus, but he turns to join in Benedickâs bit of fun. âOK, guys, whatâs up?â
âPromise not to tell anyone,â Benedick grins. âOnly Claudio here is in
lurve
! And before youask, the lucky girl is Hero!â
âHold onâ¦â Claudioâs protest is pretty feeble. âOK, I admit it,â he sighs, going all red and awkward. Bless!
The coach gives it some thought. âGood luck to you, son.â More thought. âSheâs a nice girl.â
âYouâre not just saying that?â Claudio checks.
âNo, itâs true.â
Benedick breaks the mood by bursting out laughing. âAbsolutely true!â He gets up and heads for the door. âJust donât ask me for advice â I know nothing about
lurve
!â
âCynic!â Pedro shouts after him, then slaps Claudio on the back.
They climb down from the bus, and vanish between the marble columns at the entrance to Leonatoâs villa.
âI reckon Benedickâs not as anti-woman as he makes out,â Claudio confides to his coach as they go inside. âItâs all a big act.â
âI heard that!â The man himself stops in his tracks. âListen, my motherâs a woman, Iâll giveyou that. But thatâs as far as it goes. I wouldnât trust another not to make a fool out of me, and thatâs the reason I plan to stay single for the rest of my life.â
âHa!â Pedroâs expression says heâs heard it all before. âWhatâs the betting you fall for some girl and start acting the lovesick fool before we know it?â
But Benâs having none of it. âI may fall sick for other reasons, boss, but not over a woman!â
âYeah, yeahâ¦â
âIf Iâm wrong, you can tell me what an idiot Iâve been. Iâll own up to it, no problem,â he insists.
Pedro winks at Claudio and they join the rest of the players who are crowding round the infinity pool at the back of Leonatoâs villa. âStranger things have happened,â he jokes.
Benedick strolls to the edge of the terrace and looks out over olive groves to the distant hills. âIf I do fall in love
