you?â
Dani sighed. âYes.â
âAnd you liked it?â
âNo.â
âLiar.â
âOkay, I liked it, so what? Itâs not going to happen again. I have made myself very clear on that point.â
Sharon Lynn tried unsuccessfully to hold back a grin. âDid you really? Did you by any chance make that same point out at Grandpaâs a few weeks ago?â
âYes, I did.â
Sharon Lynn continued to smirk. âGuess he doesnât hear too well.â
âHeâs a man, isnât he? Have you ever known one to listen to a blasted thing we say?â
âActually, Kyle Mason hangs on every word I say.â
âOh, for heavenâs sakes, stop gloating. We all know you caught the last decent man in the universe or so you keep reminding us.â
âHe is extraordinary, thereâs no doubt about that. Not that Duke is any slouch. Heâs charming and sexy and smart.â
âHow would you know all that? Youâve barely met the man.â
âNot true. He comes in here with his sons all the time.â She glanced up. âIn fact, theyâre on their way in right now.â
Dani flatly refused to turn around to look. âPlease, please, tell me you are making that up.â
âWhy would I do that?â
âTo drive me crazy.â
âNot me,â Sharon Lynn retorted. âBut Iâd say someone else is doing a pretty good job of it.â Her smile widened. âHey, Duke. Howâre you doing? Hi, Joshua, Zack. Whatâs it going to be today?â
âIce cream cones,â Zack replied. âDad said we could have dessert before dinner tonight. Isnât that cool?â
âWay cool,â Sharon Lynn agreed.
Dani felt Dukeâs hands settle on her shoulders. A shiver skimmed straight down her spine even before he leaned down and whispered, âTold you so.â
There was nothing to do but accept the inevitable. Slowly, she swiveled her stool around until she was face-to-face with him. Pure devilment was sparkling in his eyes. His gaze locked with hers and his expression sobered until an exquisite kind of tension shimmered in the air between them. Dani swallowed hard and forced herself to turn away. She smiled at Zachary and Joshua.
âSo whatâs this about dessert before supper?â she asked.
Already licking his double scoop of chocolate ice cream, Joshua paused long enough to say, âDad says as long as we cross our hearts and promise to eat every bite on our plates, we can do it this way just this once. Itâs `cause Dolanâs will be closed by the time he finishes fixing dinner.â
âYeah,â Zachary chimed in. âIt takes him a really, really long time to cook, âcept when he zaps stuff in the microwave.â
âI see.â
âCan you cook?â Joshua asked. regarding her speculatively.
âDani is the very best cook in the entire family,â Sharon Lynn said before Dani could respond. âHer spaghetti sauce would bring tears to your eyes. As for her pot roast, well, letâs just say that Maritza taughther and Maritza has been Grandpaâs housekeeper for practically forever and he has gourmet taste.â
Both boysâ eyes widened hopefully. âReally? Maybe you could invite us to dinner sometime,â Zachary suggested.
âYeah, we really, really love spaghetti, especially if it doesnât come out of a can,â Joshua added.
âHey, guys, itâs not polite to invite yourselves over to someoneâs house,â Duke said.
âOh, we donât stand on formality around here,â Sharon Lynn said. âDo we, Dani?â
Dani gave her a sour look, then forced a smile. âOf course not. The next time Iâm doing more than grabbing a sandwich for dinner, Iâll give you guys a call.â
Dukeâs eyebrows rose. âA sandwich? Thatâs your idea of a healthy dinner?â
âSometimes
