bench and begins to flick through the slim directory.
Nadine is wide-eyed. âWho are you ringing?â
âYour dad. Curry.â
Julie finds the number for Highland Air Charters and dials it, her heart thumping. As the phone at the other end begins to ring, she stares at Ryan. He wonât meet her eye. âJeez, Julie,â he mutters. âItâs not my fault.â
After an eternity, there is a click on the line. A breathless voice says, âHello? Whoops â this is HAC . . . â
âHi, Teddie, itâs me, Julie.â
âAre you after Tony? I think heâs out on a flight,â says Teddie vaguely; even Julie knows by now that Tony would be out on a flight at this time of day.
âActually, I was wondering if I could speak to Allan?â
âReally? What â?â
Ryan snatches the receiver from Julieâs hand. âTeddie, this is Ryan. I need to talk to Dad. Itâs important.â
Julie clasps her hands. Thank you! she mouths soundlessly, and Ryan pulls a face that says, youâre not giving me any choice.
Julie crosses her fingers while Ryan tells Allan the story, and Nadine wrings her hands. Her frightened eyes dart to the door, as if she expects Barbara to charge in at any moment. Julie can hear Allan Crabtreeâs voice all the way from the airport â a furious roar, only slightly muffled by the telephone line.
âYep,â says Ryan. âOkay. Uh-huh.â
At last he hangs up the receiver and lets out a long breath that puffs the lank hair off his forehead. âBloody hell.â
âWhat did Dad say?â whispers Nadine.
Ryan shrugs. âGo and get her back. And if she wonât come back, give her a monthâs pay and a good reference.â
âGood,â says Julie. âGood. Thatâs fair.â
Ryan heads for the back door. âIâll get my bike. You okay to stay here, Jules?â
âOf course.â She puts her arm around Nadineâs shoulder. âWhat about that game of Monopoly?â
She speaks with bravado, but as she and Nadine shake the dice and move their tokens round the board, they are both on high alert, silently praying that Barbara will stay safely shut in her bedroom until Ryan gets back.
But when she emerges, an hour later, Ryan still hasnât returned.
âWhereâs Ryan?â Barbara asks at once.
Nadine swings wide, scared eyes onto Julieâs face.
âHeâs gone to find Koki,â says Julie.
âWhy?â Barbaraâs voice is icy.
âAllan asked him to.â
âAnd how did Allan find out about it?â
Julie swallows. âI â Ryan â we told him.â
There is a silence. âIâm not quite sure why you found it necessary to get involved,â says Barbara pleasantly. âItâs not really any of your business, is it?â
âWell, I did borrow ââ Julie falters. âI suppose not.â
âI know you made a mess of hiring your own meri. But thereâs no need to interfere with our household arrangements, is there?â
Julie stares at the Monopoly board. Then she scrapes back her chair.
âMaybe I should go.â
âMaybe you should,â says Barbara.
âBut weâre in the middle ââ Nadine falls silent.
Julie mutters, âGet Ryan to ring me.â Nadine nods. Julie collects her shoulder bag and walks across the living room toward the front door. The trek across the acres of parquetry, with Barbaraâs eyes boring into her back, is the longest walk of her life.
About an hour later, Ryan rings her at Tonyâs place. He mumbles into the phone, âCanât talk long. Mumâs in the next room.â
âDid you get Koki back?â
âYeah, I told her it was all a big mistake and we wanted her to come back. She was pretty upset, but she finally agreed.â
âOh, good .â
âListen, Iâd better go. Hey, this is a bit
