I think itâs the only way weâre going to catch these guys.â
âLetâs hear it,â Joe said. âWeâve been in dangerous situations before.â
âYeah, itâs nothing new,â Frank agreed.
âTomorrow night is Aérocirqueâs last performance,â Mario said. âThereâs only one troupe that has performed every night: the Masked High-Wire Troupe. Something tells me theyâll be the ones to rob an apartment building tomorrow night.â
âOh, yeah!â Frank said. âTheyâre the guys who never take off their masks when theyâre around the other acrobats.â
âRight. They belong to some sort of cult that makes them use masks,â Mario said. âNone of the other acrobats have ever seen their faces.â
âWhere do we fit in?â Joe asked.
âWell, every troupe is at the stadium until right before the circus begins,â Mario said. âThe one troupe that doesnât perform leaves just after itâs announced that someone has taken ill.â
Frank and Joe nodded.
âSo, if my officers and I can slip you boys into the troupe as theyâre leaving, then you can be in on the robbery,â Mario said. âWeâll have you wired, so weâll know where you are every minute.â
âYou expect us to walk one of the wires?â Joe asked.
Mario shook his head. âAbsolutely not, Joe,â he said. âTwo of the acrobats are always the anchors during the performance. They never walk the wire.â
âYouâre sure?â Frank said.
âIâm sure,â Mario said. âTheyâre there to help the walkers back onto the platform.â
âSo you think these two anchor acrobats stay on the roof of the building opposite the apartment being robbed, sort of like lookouts for the guys walking the rope?â Joe said.
Mario sighed. âI guess it does sound kind of farfetched,â he finally said. âLetâs just forget it and see if we can think of a more sensible solution.â
âNo, Mario, this doesnât sound far-fetched at all,â Frank said. âIn fact, it sounds brilliant. And Joe and I could certainly handle the detective work required.â
They were nearing Marioâs neighborhood.
âIâm thinking that tomorrow morningâearlyâthe three of us should head out to the stadium, where Iâll make it known that itâs very important to the Philadelphia Police Department that some important visitors practice with the masked troupe,â Mario said. âThey may not want it, but I donât think theyâll say anything, because if theyâre really behind all these robberies, they wonât want to irritate me.â
âSounds like a plan,â Frank said. He turned to Joe. âWe need to go to bed right when we get home,â he added. âCircus performers need their sleep!â

The next morning, bright and early, before Chet, Matt, or Tony was awake, Mario took Frank and Joe to the stadium. When they arrived, all of the Aérocirque acrobats were unloading from two charter buses.
âI hadnât even thought about this,â Joe said, âbut where do they stay at night?â
âBaron von Battenberg has rented an entire motel just a couple of miles from here,â Mario said.
âTheyâre probably too smart to stash any of the stolen items there,â Frank said.
âProbably,â Mario agreed. âOf course, weâre not sure theyâre behind these robberies,â he added. âIt could just be a coincidence. Somebody could be setting them up.â
Joe shook his head. âThe people behind thesehigh-rise apartment robberies are trained acrobats, Mario,â he said, âand Iâm assuming that the only trained acrobats in Philadelphia are the ones from Aérocirque.â
Mario nodded.
âSo we
