night.â
âEverybodyâs talking about it,â Carpentier said.
âWhat are they saying?â
Carpentier shrugged. âWhatâs to say?â
âWhat can I do for you?â
âA body was found this morning in the river in Montreal East. Itâs been taken to the coroner. He wonât be doing the autopsy until tomorrow, but I want you to go and see if itâs a homicide.â
âAnd if it is?â
âCome and tell me.â
âRight.â
Dougherty walked out of the office, thinking he wasnât sure if he would rather be Carpentierâs gofer or be left on the sidelines of the big moves by the special squad.
----
âCome on,â Dougherty said, âeven I can see those are rope marks around his neck.â
âDoesnât mean it was homicide.â
The body was male, probably between fifteen and twenty years old, and heâd been in the water awhile, but the marks on his neck were clear. He was naked from the waist up but he was still wearing shoes and jeans and the belt was tight.
Dougherty said, âSo, what happened, he tried to hang himself and when that didnât work he went swimming?â
The technician said, âYouâll find out when Dr. Robillard performs the autopsy.â
âWhen will that be?â
âI donât know, he has a few to do before this one. I donât know how long they will take.â
âIt would help with the homicide investigation if we could start right away.â
âIf itâs a homicide.â
Dougherty started out of the morgue, saying, âIs he in his office?â
A woman in a police uniform was coming in then, and she looked past Dougherty and said, â
Est-ce que câest le garçon quâon a sorti de la rivière?
â
The technician was closing the drawer and said, â
Demandez au Docteur Robillard.
â
She said, â
Laissez-moi voir.
â
The drawer was closed.
Dougherty spoke French, saying, âWho are you?â He didnât recognize the uniform.
The woman said, âWho are you?â
âIâm Detective Dougherty.â
âSergeant Legault, Police de Longueuil.â
Dougherty figured she was somewhere between twenty-five and thirty-five, it was hard to tell because unlike most of the other policewomen he knew, this Sergeant Legault wasnât wearing any make-up and her hair was short.
She said, âI believe thatâs Mathieu Simard.â
âHeâs been missing?â
âFor three days, yes.â She looked at the morgue technician and said, also in French, âYou were supposed to call me.â
âAfter the autopsy.â
âAs soon as the body came in.â
âTalk to Dr. Robillard.â
âI will.â She turned and walked out of the room.
Dougherty caught up with her at the elevator. âHeâs from Longueuil?â
âYes, both of them.â
âThere are two missing?â
The elevator door opened and Legault said, âYes, him and his girlfriend.â
âIs she still missing?â
âNo,â Legault said as the elevator doors closed. âHer body washed up on Ãle du Fort yesterday.â
Dougherty waited a moment then turned and walked out of the Parthenais building. He was a little disappointed that the homicide would have to be turned over to the Longueuil police, but he was also relieved. Couple of teenagers in the river, unless there was a very good witness, which Dougherty just knew there wouldnât be, it didnât seem likely an investigation would go anywhere.
----
At the homicide office Carpentier said, âYou met Sergeant Legault, thatâs good.â
Dougherty said, âWhy is that good?â
âYouâll be working together.â
âWhat?â
âThe Longueuil police do not have a dedicated homicide squad,â Carpentier said. âAnd they asked us to lead the
