find him and help himââ She stopped briefly. âIf we can; if heâs still alive. I donât know whatâs happened to him, he may be in trouble, or hurt, but you act as if youâre the ones who are hurt, that heâs insulted you because heââ She stopped again. No one had mentioned embezzlement and she would not be the one to bring it up. âHeâs beenâhe is a wonderful husband and a wonderful father and I love him and I wonât turn my back on him, even if you do, and I donât understand how you can talk about flower gardens and wood carvings and orchids when Craigââ
Victoria raised an imperious hand. âWe do not need you to tell us how to behave. You know very little about usââ
âIâd know more if youâd tell me!â
âDo not interrupt me! We opened our home to you and your children; you have little cause to criticize us.â
âI didnât want to.â Katherineâs eyes filled with tears. âBut I think youâd be happier if youâd never heard of Craig Fraser at all.â
âKatherine,â Tobias chided, looking at Victoriaâs tight lips. âToo much, too much. Donât say more than we can forget.â
âYou donât want us here,â she went on doggedly. âYou donât want me and you donât want Craig. But of course it was very kind of you to invite us.â She hesitated, then turned to leave.
âYoung woman!â Victoriaâs icy voice stopped her. She heard Tobias lament, âOh, Katherine,â and Melanie murmur, âHow charming; no one walks out onââ as Victoria said, âHow dare you turn your back on me! And where do you think you are going? You have no one else to help you.â
Katherine half-turned to see herâso beautiful in her regal anger it seemed nothing could touch her. âYou donât want to help and I donât need you. Craig and I have gotten along byourselves for ten years, you havenât existed for us, so why should I come to you now? Iâll find him . . . and weâll be all right.â Quickly she left the room, trembling so violently she thought she would fall.
But suddenly Ross was there, his arm lightly around her shoulders as they walked through the drawing room. âI think you should stay,â he told her. âWhat you said about us was partly true, but Victoria was right: there are many things you donât know about us. And thereâs no question that weâll help you financially. I apologize for my wifeâs insinuationsââ
âYou have nothing to apologize for. But I donât want any help from your family. All I want to do is go home, where I belong, and find my husband.â
He started to say something, then changed his mind as they came to the library. Jennifer and Carrie were locked in a computerized race with Todd and Jon on the television screen and it was a few minutes before Katherine was able to pry them loose. âThey have a million games, Mom!â Todd said as they all walked down a long gallery.
âThey arenât ours,â said Jon. âTheyâre Great-Grandmaâs. But she lets us play any time we want, and when you come backââ
âAre we coming back?â Jennifer asked, squinting as she tried to read her motherâs face.
âNoââ Katherine began and that single word, louder than she had intended, met Victoria and Tobias, who were waiting in the entry hall.
Tobias took Katherineâs hands in his. âWeâve all behaved badly; Iâm quite ashamed of everyone. But you will come back, of course you will, now that weâve met, now that we consider you part of the familyââ
But it was clear he wasnât asking them to stay. Katherine stepped back. âGoodbye,â she said to Victoria. âIâm sorry.â
âSo am I,â Victoria
