yet it was good enough that we both saw that thing.â
Paolo started to reply, but then paused and simply nodded.
âWhat thing?â Abhi demanded a third time. âIf the two of you donât start explaining whatâs going on here, Iâm going to mutiny and take us ashore.â
âI donât know what it was,â Carrie said. âIt was something big, lurking in the collapsing trench. A territorial predator of some kind.â
âA shark?â
âNo, not a shark. Like I said, I donât know what it was. I only caught a few glimpses. But I have a theory.â
Both Abhi and Paolo stared at her intently, listening.
âI started to hallucinate,â she explained. âAt first, I just felt the numbness around my mouth. But then, when I felt the water temperature change, I dropped a torch down into the collapse, and I sort of ⦠zoned out. I started thinking about something that happened when I was a kid.â
âI had a moment like that, as well,â Paolo confirmed. âIt only lasted a few seconds, but I got distracted.â
âDid you notice the temperature change?â Carrie asked.
âNot at first. Not until you got my attention. As I said, I was ⦠distracted.â
âWhen it started to pursue usâwhen it got closerâthatâs when the numbing sensation overcame the rest of me, starting with my leg. At the same time, I started hallucinating, again.â
âWhat did you see?â Abhi asked.
âMy mother. And sheâs been dead for almost two years.â
âOh, Carrieâ¦â Abhiâs voice was thick with emotion. âIâm sorry.â
âThank you, Abhi, but Iâm fine. Really. It was just a hallucination, I know that. You didnât experience anything else, Paolo?â
âNo.â
âI think thatâs because you were closer to the surface than I was. I think that thing, whatever it was, sends out hallucinogenic neurotoxins through the water to pacify its prey. Similar to an Irukandji jellyfish. I knew it was there. I knew it was observing me. But I felt no fear. Just like when Peter and I dived. I wasnât scared. I wasnât concerned at all. If anything, I just wanted to surrender.â
âOkay, then.â Abhi strode toward the motor. âThat sounds good to me. I vote we surrender.â
âBut,â Paolo said, ignoring Abhi and turning to Carrie, âif itâs a neurotoxin, why would the effects have been stronger this time? Why wouldnât it have impacted both of us like this on the previous dive?â
âBecause I was closer to it this time. Because it turned aggressive. And in doing so, it flooded the water with a much larger dosage. Enough that it was able to somehow penetrate my wetsuit.â
Abhi started the motor and raised his voice to be heard over it. âIâm glad that you are both okay. Weâve done a lot of science today. Hooray for science.â
Carrie stood up. âWhat are you doing?â
âIâm driving,â Abhi explained. âYou did your science. Now itâs time to go home.â
âNo,â Carrie said, ânow itâs time we apply what weâve learned and go back down there.â
Abhi sighed. âI was afraid youâd say something like that.â
Grinning, Carrie walked toward him. âAnd step aside, Abhi. This time, Iâm driving.â
âNo,â he insisted, gently but firmly pushing her away, âyou are not. You may be in charge, Carrie, but Iâm the pilot of this boat.â
âYouâre serious,â she said, surprised. âWhat gives, Abhi?â
He stared straight ahead, and hesitated before answering her.
âWhat gives is that Iâm scared,â he admitted. âI donât like being out here. Something about this area feels wrong. But, here we are, and if weâre not heading back to land anytime soon, then I
