crept around the entrance wall, and as soon as she
was out of sight, she leapt into a sprint. She had to get away now, before she
fell too deeply for them.
Chapter Five
Running
carelessly, blindly through the jungle, she tried to get as far away from the
cave as physically possible. It grew dark early in the jungle, with the thick
overgrowth blotting out the sky. If she’d been at the top of the trees, she’d
still have an hour of daylight left. Beneath the canopy, it was as dark as if
the sun had set an hour ago.
Yvonne tried to
move with stealth, but she couldn´t since she had to put as much distance
between her and the cave as quickly as possible, but not only that, she had no
fucking clue where she was running to! It did help that throughout the
afternoon, she´d tried to map a route back to her men, but she´d completely
lost her way when she´d had to ride Remy. No doubt they’d planned it that
way. It was only an island, only so big. If she could just gain some distance
from them and ride out the night, she felt certain she’d be able to find her
men sometime in the next few days—they had to be looking for her.
She swore under
her breath when a rogue branch slapped her in the face. Remy had moved
quickly, so she´d had to concentrate on just staying on his back--she had no
idea whereabouts the cave was in relation to her own camp. Her main priority
at that moment was to distance herself from the men, and hope to God that no
other cat decided to take a fancy to her!
Five minutes
later, Yvonne decided that she was far away enough to be safe from the three
men locating her. She started trying to disguise her tracks, which was bloody
hard in the twilight, but she managed to clear about ninety percent of them. She
stopped in an area that looked familiar to her, leaning against a tree to get
both her bearings and her breath back. She tried to remember if it was
familiar from before or after she´d clambered on to Remy´s back. She hoped it
was the former, since it meant that she was nearer to her camp than she´d
originally thought.
Something rustled
in the woods. She stilled suddenly and caught her breath, not daring to make a
sound as her ears searched out the source of the noise. Possibly a snake, she
hoped. She looked around at the bushes surrounding her, but they were all
moving, which was no help at all. She spun silently around, cocked her head to
the side and opened her senses to the sounds of the jungle. She thought that
it was something from behind her, so quickly she sprinted in an easterly
direction, when she´d been meaning to go west. She ran a few steps, and
shrieked when Remy ran out and tackled her to the ground.
“What the fuck?”
she yelled, her heart beating like crazy at the unexpectedness of his attack. “Remy
are you trying to give me a heart attack?”
“If you´da stayed
where we´d put you, chérie, I wouldna had to tackle you, now would I?”
he asked reasonably. He wasn´t mad at her, which gave her some relief. That´s
all she needed, a pissed off cougar after her blood!
“Surely every
hostage has to try to make a break away?” she asked him.
“Hostage? Shit,
is that what you think this is?” he started to chuckle, then stopped when she
tried to knee him in the balls. He tutted at her.
She mock growled
at him in annoyance and snarled, “Bite me. I heard you earlier on, Remy, you
told the others that you should get rid of me! I wasn´t about to stay around
for you to maul me to death!”
“When the fuck
did I say that?” he snapped in annoyance.
“When I passed
out, I woke up and was listening to you all. I heard you say
