Redmond is breathing down my neck.â I reached for my water decanter. âI hope Henry and Dan arenât out there spilling the rest of the beans.â
âNo.â Kit took the glass from me. âThey know you want Dunlop kept out of it for now. But they canât deny that Folsomâs murder and your attempted one are possibly connected.â
âPossibly. Iâll give the captain possibly but no more.â
âShall I let them in?â
âGive me five minutes.â I settled myself grimly. âThen you may open the door of the cage. The lion tamer will be ready with her chair. And Kitââshe turned at the doorââget hold of a Fairfield, Connecticut, phone book. I want to know if Loretta Vaughan is in it.â
âShe is. Dan looked her up.â
She went out, and Sadd stood up. âYour mail is on the table beside you.â
âThanks.â I glanced at it without interest.
âDo you want me to stay?â
âI want you to go back to Florida. Youâve been a pal.â
He looked out the window. âAnd leave this platitudinously lovely white Christmas? The snow has stopped, itâs a beautifully bright afternoon, and the streets are clear. Iâm tempted to take a walk.â
âWhy donât you? Henry and I used to love to walk around the Village.â I felt the old pang.
He turned from the window. âMaybe Iâll stroll up to Cornelia Street.â
âSadd! And drop in on Pushing Murder?â
âWhy not? I havenât done any Christmas shopping yet.â
âWonderful!â I started to hug my knees but couldnât. âChat with Dwight as if everything were hunky-doryââ
âI have never been able to discover the origin of that phrase.â
ââeven though he must know you know everything. We have to keep him assured that Sal will remain oblivious.â
âIn her foolâs paradise.â Sadd pulled on the dear, familiar parka. âExcept that sheâs no fool, which makes it worse.â
He went out, announcing to my visitors as he passed them that he was going to âstretch his legs.â
Henry, Dan, and Kit filed in, followed by Captain Redmond, and I said immediately, âCaptain, I apologize for fibbing to you. Iâm just scared to death for a friend of mine.â
âI can understand that, Mrs. Gamadge.â
They all sat down, and I played hostess. âIâd love a cup of coffee. Would anyone else?â
No, no one would. Henry went out, and the hostess rattled on. âSo you know Dan and Kit.â
âSure do.â The captain smiled. âIâve been kidding Dan about that cast. A sharp-shooting New York boy like him getting mugged.â He went on, looking not at me but at them. âYouâve got a couple of smart kids watching out for you, Mrs. Gamadge.â
âDonât I know it.â
The captain crossed his legs and looked back at me. âYour son tells me youâve been involved in a certain amount of crime yourself.â
âIâve dabbled,â I murmured. âIt was mostly my husbandâ¦â
âThen you know that the bottom line is evidence. Do you have any evidence in the Folsom murder?â
âNot a shred.â
âJust a hefty suspicion?â
âYes.â
âCan I persuade you to shareââ
âNo. Please. No.â
He hesitated. âI canât pressure you, Mrs. Gamadge. You arenât a witness and for all I know you may be on the wrong track.â
âYes, yes, I may be,â I said eagerly.
âBut you donât really think so, do you?â he said. I squirmed. âHow will you feel if this person kills again?â
âHe wonât, as long as I keep my mouth shut.â
âDo you have to keep it shut forever?â
âNo. Just till Saturday.â
He looked at me steadily. âAt which point he will take off, and you
