fists.â
âI assume you mean Gran and me, but I donât know you.â Isleenâs voice was surprisingly strong. âExplain why you hate us.â
Isleenâs words hit the brakes on Xanderâs anger. Damn. She was holding her own against Uncle Matt. It was a lovely thing.
âYouâre right. Weâve never met, but I know Gale. Iâve seen the heartlessness at her core. Iâve dealt with the devastation she leaves in her wake. And you areââhis gaze traveled from her to Xander and back againââher granddaughter. Thatâs enough for me.â
âI donât know what youâre talking about. How do you know Gran?â
The way Mattâs mouth fell open mightâve made Xander laugh, if he hadnât felt his own mouth do the same. She must not have made the family connection quite yet.
âThis is Matt. Alexâs brother,â Xander said.
She shifted further away from him, but continued to aim her gaze at him. âOkay, but who is Alex?â Her face was washed in total ignorance.
âYouâve got to be goddamned kidding me!â The words exploded from Mattâs mouth, too loud to be socially acceptable in a hospital. âGale never fucking mentioned Alex. Not once?â He didnât wait for Isleenâs reply. âXan, if you donât see this as the warning sign it is, you deserve the same fate as your father.â
âWhoâs Alex? And what happened to him?â Isleenâs voice carried obvious concern.
Matt snapped his lips closed, Xanderâs cue to explain. âAlex is your grandmotherâs husband.â This time Isleenâs lips parted and an airy whisper of sound escaped. âHeâs Mattâs brother. And my father.â
Her head jerked as if sheâd been delivered an invisible slap. âAre you sure?â
What was going on that Gale hadnât told her anything? âYeah, Iâm sure.â
She started shaking her head and looked down at the bedding. âI canât believe weâre family .â She spoke the last word as if sheâd just uttered the worldâs worse curse.
âYeah. I guess thatâs one way of putting it.â Okay, that wasnât the kind of response he wouldâve expected from her finding out her grandmother had been married. Though he couldnât quite say what a normal response wouldâve been. He just suspected this wasnât it.
Matt started speaking, despite her continued head shaking. âThe doctor is comfortable releasing herâespecially with the facility being right there. Weâre leaving as soon as you sign the payment arrangement papers at the nurseâs station. Alex is already on the way home with Galeâtheyâre traveling via medical van.â
âHome?â Isleenâs attention snapped to Matt. âAfter all this time, I donât think we have a home anymore.â
âBaby, he means our home.â Technically, not his home, but he didnât feel like complicating an already crazy situation. âGale and Alexâs home. The Institute. Gale mustâve mentioned the Institute. Sheâs still part-owner.â
Isleenâs gaze met his. There was something in her eyes, something he couldnât name that seemed to be pleading forâfor what? He was lost, didnât understand what was happening.
Her chin began to quiver and her eyes went wet, but she blinked rapidly, fanning away the tears. She shifted away from him on the bed, out of touching range, and stared down at the mass of sheets and covers. âWhen do we leave?â Her voice was steadier than her chin.
âTen minutes.â Matt turned and headed for the door, then stopped. âReporters are stationed at the lobby entrance and employee entrance, so youâll meet me at the ambulance entrance.â
âOkay,â she said. The word itself wasnât bad, the tone of her voice
