the zipper. Would you unzip it for me?”
Whiskey stood up and he brushed her hair out of the way and his fingers left a path of fire on her skin as he unzipped her dress.
Elena walked to the bedroom to change as he took his flask and added whiskey to both cups. He wasn’t sure where this would go with Elena. He wanted her badly, but he wouldn’t push her. He didn’t see pictures of Hunter and he wondered if she was truly done mourning him. Elena wasn’t just a fuck; she was the type of woman you made a commitment to. He wanted to know everything about her.
Elena came back dressed in black leggings and an oversized gray sweatshirt. Whiskey looked at her and liked her choice of clothing.
“I added a shot to the coffee, darlin’.”
Elena sat on the floor and looked at the man before her. There was such a pull to be with him, it was scaring her.
“Whiskey, what’re we doing? You make me feel alive again. I haven’t felt this way in such a very long time. It’s scaring me, to be honest.”
“Elena, I won’t push you into anything until you’re ready. I’ll be honest with you. I’m no angel, and I’m trying to be a better man for my girls. I want a relationship. I’m no good single. I want a son or two, and I like marriage. When I’m settled, I don’t stray none. I did with Margo, but she was a big mistake. I don’t want to make those kinda mistakes again.”
“Are you asking me to have a relationship with you and maybe more?” Elena wanted to make sure she heard him right.
“I’m asking you to trust me and get to know me. I’ll be coming to Jersey often to check on Shanna. We have a chapter way down in Southern Jersey, so I have a few reasons to come up here. What I’d really like to do is lay in bed and just hold you, nothing more, darlin’.”
Elena looked at this man before her, a man she damn well knew was a killer and had a very bad reputation. It didn’t matter to her in the least. She liked the idea of him holding her very much.
“Just holding me, huh? Are you sure about that, Whiskey? I’ve heard that line before, you know.” She drank the coffee and studied him.
“I keep my word, Elena. If I wanted a fuck, I can get that easy enough. I see something rare in you and I want to savor that. I want to know everything you’re willing to share with me. We’ve both lost loved ones, we both understand that pain. It’s time to live again though. What I want, not just any woman can give me. I want to know you’re that woman.”
Whiskey drained his coffee and stood up, offering his hand to Elena, who took it. He pulled her close to him. Those damn butterflies were fluttering in her stomach again and this felt so right it scared her. She turned her face up for a kiss and felt his tongue seeking hers. He kisses as well as he dances, she thought as his lips crushed hers.
Whiskey did keep his word. He went out to his car and got a pair of sweatpants to sleep in. They snuggled together on her bed and she traced his tattoos with her nails. The heat coming off his body felt so good and soon enough she was fast asleep.
It took Whiskey longer to fall asleep, but for once, he felt like Shannon was at rest now. A single tear ran out of the corner of his right eye. It was time to let Shannon go, he knew, and he did all the while holding Elena close. He wasn’t going to fuck things up with Elena. He’d take it slow and he’d see if she was the woman he’d spend the rest of his life with. Maybe they weren’t in love yet, but he had strong feelings for Elena and he knew she had them for him. He slept well for the first time in a very long time.
The phone ringing woke them both up way too early. He kept his eyes closed as Elena grabbed for it. “Hello?” she answered.
“Are you losing your mind, Elena?” Joy’s voice admonished. “What if Thrash sees Whiskey stayed the night?”
“Joy, I don’t care who sees his car here. Get your nose out of my business. How dare you spy on me?”
