her in sudden confusion. âWhat do you mean? He lives there, doesnât he?â
âUsually,â Maggie said.
Dinah bit back a groan. âWhat does that mean? Please donât tell me heâs living right here in town.â
âActually you might have better luck finding him in Atlanta,â Maggie admitted with apparent reluctance.
âAtlanta? What on earth is he doing in Atlanta?â She frowned at Maggie. âAnd donât tell me you donât know because I can tell that you do. Itâs time to start spilling some information, Maggie, or Iâm going to have to wonder if youâre not as anxious as Cord is to keep the two of us apart. He has a history of it. You donât.â
Maggie sighed. âYouâre really not going to drop this whole ridiculous notion you have about getting together with Bobby, are you?â
âNo. At least not till Iâve spoken to him and he tells me that he wants no part of what we used to have.â
âThatâs what I was afraid of. Okay, heâs over in Atlanta working.â
âPermanently?â
âNo. Heâs been handling a project over there for a while now, a few months at least.â
âWhy the hell didnât Cord just tell me that?â Dinah grumbled, the scowled at Maggie. âWhy didnât you?â
âI just did.â
âYou could have mentioned it the other day. I could have seen him in Atlanta by now.â
âWhat would have been the fun in that?â Maggie asked. âIâve already told you that I think youâre wasting your time on Bobby. Personally, I like the idea of you and Cord butting up against each other and setting off sparks for a while. I think itâs just what you need.â
âI donât,â Dinah replied emphatically. âSo just tell me what you know. How can I reach Bobby in Atlanta? Do you suppose heâs renting someplace? Or is he staying in a hotel?â
Maggie shrugged. âI have no idea. You could ask Cord.â
Dinah frowned at the suggestion. âI am done asking Cordell anything at all.â
Maggieâs lips twitched. âIs that because you donât like the answers heâs giving you or because youâre starting to like the fireworks a little too much?â
Dinah regarded her friend impatiently. âYou really need to get a life.â
âProbably so,â Maggie agreed readily. âBut until I do, Iâm happy to meddle in yours.â
âStop it,â Dinah pleaded. âEspecially if you have some insane notion that Cord and I are the perfect match.â
âMaybe not perfect,â Maggie said thoughtfully. âBut darn close, and definitely hot.â
Dinah gave her a helpless look. âYouâve never even seen us together. What makes you think there is anything hot between us?â
âOh, sweetie,â Maggie said, laughter in her eyes, âeven if a woman would have to be dead not to react to Cord, itâs written all over your face every time you mention his name. The man ties you up in knots.â
âDonât be ridiculous,â Dinah scoffed, then hesitated. Much as she hated to admit it, Maggie did know her well. âWhat do you think you see when I mention Bobby?â
âComfortable,â Maggie said at once.
âPerfect,â Dinah said happily. âComfortable is exactly what Iâm after.â
âMaybe so, but itâs not whatâs best for you and it is definitely not what will make you happy, not for the long haul.â
âAnd you know that because?â
âBecause Iâve known you all your life and I know your deepest, darkest secrets. Cordell Beaufort was always the one who made your heart pound.â
âOnly because he infuriated me,â Dinah snapped. âWhich you are starting to do, as well.â
Maggie merely laughed. âBecause you know Iâm right. Now that weâve
