Lisa, Janine, and Sarah were organizing the festivities. Amazingly, Principal Losman agreed to cancel last period so we could all meet in the gym and celebrate. But first, he insisted on having a meeting with the band.
âHe wants to see us during lunch time,â said Daniela.
I swore I saw Sludge elbow Eldrick in the ribs.
âWe canât make it, man,â said Sludge.
âWhy not? This is important,â I told them.
âWe, uh...umm. We, uhâ¦â Sludge fumbled for words.
âIâm tutoring Sludge in geography,â said Eldrick.
Something sounded fishy. âYouâre tutoring a grade eight when youâre only in grade six?â
âIâm a land-and-water whiz,â offered Eldrick.
Why would Sludge want to spend extra time with that twerp? Something was up, but I didnât have time to get to the bottom of it. Lisa was insisting on going over the party plans.
âWeâve asked everyone to come dressed in either yellow or blue,â she said excitedly. âIsnât that cool?â
âSure, I guess so,â I said reluctantly. My favourite colours were black and green.
âYellow and blue,â she said, eyeing me with exasperation. âThe national colours of Sweden. Weâre going to arrange everyone in the bleachers so we make a human flag. Donât you think Olaf will love that?â
âHeâll love itâif he can make it,â I told her. She had caught me a bit off guard. âHeâs got a big report due in Stockholm this week.â
Lisaâs face crumpled up. âHe has to come!â she wailed. âThe partyâs in his honour! Sarah! Janine! Olaf might pull a no-show for his own party!â
Janine and Sarah showed up out of nowhere. âWhat do you mean he wonât be there?â They were getting hysterical.
âOkay, okay,â I said trying to diffuse the situation. âIâll see what I can do. Maybe he can finish his report tonight.â
âHe has to come,â cried Sarah.
âHe is the band,â sniffled Janine. âItâs called Olaf âs Army, not Adam âs Army.â
I got her message loud and clear. The awesome support we got at the District Donnybrook was because of our tall, Swedish, lead singer. Without him, weâd just be another band. I was in a bit of a pickle. Olafâs Army was the key to our success. I had to keep them happy, even if it meant making Daniela hobnob with her fans.
âIâll make sure heâs there,â I told them.
Daniela was going to kill me!
In the end, I was the only one who met with Principal Losman. Sludge and Eldrick had their mysterious tutoring session. Beena and Meena were busy giving an interview to the school newspaper. And Daniela was too furious to speak to anyone.
âI am not going to any stupid party as Olaf,â she had huffed when I told her. âI donât speak Swedish and I donât want Janine Stroop hanging off of me.â She stomped off angrily. I headed to the office by myself.
Principal Losman led me into his room. âCongratulations on your victory.â
âThanks,â I said. âAnd thanks for letting us celebrate during last period tomorrow.â
âThatâs what I want to talk to you about,â said Principal Losman, getting straight to the point.
âAdam,â started Prinicpal Losman. His tone made me think of my parentsânot a good thing. âMaybe itâs time to end this charade. The school is going wild for a student who doesnât even exist. I think itâs becoming too much.â
Janineâs words, â Itâs called Olafâs Army, not Adamâs Army, â echoed in my mind. I knew what would happen if our hoax was revealed.
âPlease, Principal Losman,â I begged, âlet Sick on a Snow Day compete in the City Championship with Olaf as lead singer. I know I promised you he would be 33,000 feet in the
