âWhat are they going to do?â Veronique asked.
âFind out what those two men are up to.â
Max retrieved her palm computer and focused intently on the screen. The bumpy, darkened image crept closer to the two figures. They were dressed in dark skivvies, beanies and gloves, and their faces had been blackened. Lindenâs watch caught their conversation and Maxâs Descrambler translated.
âItâs almost nine oâclock. She should be here soon,â a raspy voice said.
âHow do you know sheâll turn up?â A second, uneasy voice whispered.
âI hear sheâs a feisty one. She wonât let her dad be kidnapped and do nothing about it. Not after our invitation.â
âWhy did he have us meet her here?â the second one breathed. âItâs a little creepy, isnât it?â
âSorry if itâs not glamorous enough for you.â
âI donât need glamour; I just donât need freaky.â He sighed. âAll of this because of a piece of rock. Why does he want it so badly, anyway?â
âNot sure, but weâve been paid good money to do this job, and Iâm not leaving until we do it.â
Max watched as Linden moved his radio watch even closer to the two men.
âWhatâs he doing now?â Veronique asked.
âIâm not sure yet.â
There was a brief pause before Linden released a ghoulish wail: âOooooo.â
âWhat was that?â The second man gasped.
âI donât know,â the raspy one hissed. âBut donât get so close; youâre on my toes.â
âOooooo.â It was Toby this time.
âItâs a ghost. I knew it. Weâre being attacked by a ghost.â
âThereâs no such thing as ghosts.â
Within seconds a vase of flowers lifted from a nearby grave and floated within centimetres of their faces.
â That is a ghost.â
âWhyyy arrrre yooou heeeere?â Linden deepened his voice and added a ghostly waver.
Maxâs computer screen showed torchlights skittling amongst the gravestones like panicked moths. âYouâd better come out, whatever you are, or weâll ⦠Ouch! That ghost threw a stone at me.â
âTheyâre not ghosts!â
âWell, what are they then?â
âI donât know!â
âWhooooo has sent yooooou?â Linden wailed.
âIâm getting out of here.â The second man shuddered.
âYouâre not going anywhere.â
âWhoo has paiiid yooou to beeee heere?â Toby sang out.
âIt was â¦â
âWhat are you mad? You canât tell anyone or weâre done for.â
âTell us!â Toby whined. âOr we will haaaauuuunt you for aaaaall your dayyyys.â
âBut these ghosts are going to get us if we donât tell.â A splintering crash rang out. âThatâs it, Iâm out of here.â
Max and Veronique heard scuffled sounds as the screen went black, followed by footsteps and panting.
âWhatâs happening?â Veronique asked Max.
âIâm not sure.â Max drew in a quick breath. âI canât talk to Linden yet in case we give them away. Do you recognise the voices of either of those men?â
âNo.â
âAnd what did they mean all this being for a piece of rock ?â
âI donât know.â Veronique sat heavily on the lounge. Fifi climbed beside her and lay her head in her lap. âSo it was a trap and theyâre after me?â
âIt seems so,â Max answered.
âWhy?â
âThatâs what we have to figure out.â
âMaybe this is why Papa gave me the amulet. To protect myself from those men.â Veronique looked up. âWe have to tell Tetu.â
âTetu might be in on it.â
âWe donât know that.â Veronique shook her head and nestled Fifi closer.
âThink about it,â Max
