they survived the off-seasons.
Across the café, one of the milkshake girls waved. âHey, Christian!â Her friends elbowed one another, all smiling.
âHey there . . . um . . . you!â Christian said. âGood to see you again.â
Kirby raised an eyebrow. âCase in point,â she whispered. âCallaLoretti, the one who just said hi? They hooked up last summer. He doesnât even remember her name.â
âWhose name?â Christian said, suddenly in my space. Without asking me to move over, he slid into the booth. I was a Kane sandwich, and he smiled at his brother on my other side and leaned in close, breath hot in my ear. âLooks like youâve got a new fan,â he whispered, nodding toward Sebastian.
Across from us, Vanessa sat next to Kirby and laughed. âEww. Get a room, yâall.â
Her words held not a hint of jealousy.
I couldnât figure that girl out.
âDonât encourage her,â Kirby said, talking about me, and if I wasnât so perfectly sandwiched between the Kane brothers, I wouldâve kicked her under the table. Vanessa mightâve claimed an open mind about Christianâs female companions, but that didnât mean I wanted her thinking I was one of them.
No matter what Vanessa said, the green-eyed devil could rise any time. I had five beautiful sisters. Jealousy trailed us so often she may as well have been the sixth.
âWhat the hell is that?â Christian poked the doll head on the table.
âElyse found it,â Sebastian said.
Before I could defend myself, Christian was leaning in again. âElyse, if you need something to cuddle up with at night, there are much better options around here.â
âHello!â Vanessa said. âRoom! Get one!â
Christian gave me a wink, then waved to Noah at the counter.âBring us two of whateverâs good today, Katz. Preferably heavy on the dead animal and vitamin G.â
âGreasy specials on the double,â Noah called out from the grill. âTen minutes.â
âSo, ya scalawags, howâs tricks on the olâ Queen of ?â Vanessa wanted to know. To me, she said, âDonât know what kinda trouble yâall got into with your aunt, but if someone made me work on that Âfloating piece aâ shââ
âWatch it,â Christian said. âYouâre talking about my girl right there.â
Vanessa laughed. âSS POS ainât nobodyâs girl.â
âWhatâs POS?â Sebastian asked.
âPiece of . . . stupid,â Christian said.
âMom isnât making her do anything,â Kirby said. âMy cousin drives her own crazy train. But sheâs probably more qualified than most of the sailors at the Cove.â As if I werenât there, Kirby launched into an overview of my boating skills, told them all about the resort, about how Iâd been born in the sea. Short version, anyway. âElyse pretty much belongs to the water.â
Sheâd probably meant in the water, but I didnât correct her. No one knew the whole storyânot even Lemon. Not even Natalie, and she was there the last time the sea tried to take me.
She was the one whoâd fished me out.
Dead, mostly.
I closed my eyes, tried to hold back the shiver I knew would comeanyway. It started in my feet, rolled up through my insides until even my scalp was covered in gooseflesh.
Next to me, Christian stirred, whispered in my ear. âSorry. Didnât mean to drip on you.â He shifted over, putting some space between us. His eyes were full of concern, a softness that clashed with his usual cockiness. âBetter?â
It wasnât. I nodded anyway.
âSo how bad is it?â Kirby asked Christian. âLike, Extreme Makeover: Boat Edition bad?â
âPiece of stupid bad?â Sebastian giggled.
Christian took out his phone, set it on the table where everyone
