right.â She took a seat again. âWe know that thereâs been someone nibbling at dealers across the âpath, and we ainât been paying that no mind. Last night, that changed.â
âWhat happened?â Hannik asked.
âThe guy stepped up and hit a shipment drop, is what we hear.â
âHow big?â Colin asked. He wasnât sure he wanted to hear the answer.
âNo one is talking numbers, from what we hear across the street. But the word is Fenmere is going to start cracking skulls to find this âthorn in his side.ââ
âSo heâs going after this âthorn,â then?â
âAnd from what I hear, if he thinks the thorn is on this side of Waterpath, no truce is going to keep him from coming over to get him.â
Everyone groaned.
âI got to ask,â the Rabbit captain asked. âAnyone claiming this? Anyone know anyone who knows anyone?â
Colin put on his best dice game face. Nobody in Aventil needed trouble from Fenmere, and the last thing Colin needed was for any one of these folks to think he had any clue what might have happened. Or who it might have been. But he had a damned good idea indeed.
âNo one?â The Rabbit captain shrugged. âDidnât figure.â
Hannik scoffed at the Rabbit captain. âYouâre only asking so you can turn your teeth once Fenmereâs boys ask you.â
âWe ainât neverââ
âRabbits always turn their teeth!â
âRabbits gonna show youââ
âEnough!â the Reverend shouted. Everyone became silent. He said, much calmer, âNow, so we are clear, none of you claim this âThornâ is with any of you.â
Four-Toe shook his head. âIf he was one of ours, heâd blazing well know not to bring heat like that.â
âThis is going to be trouble for everyone,â Yessa said. âDonât be surprised if you see some rattling out there the next few days.â
The Hallaranâs Boys stood up, chests out. Hannik said, âThey cross Waterpath to rattle us, theyâll get what for.â
Yessa shook her head. âEasy for you. Fenmereâs goons cross, itâs Orphans and Rabbits who bear most of their rattle.â
âPrinces feel it,â Jutie added. Colin glared at him, but that did nothing to hold back his swagger. âAnd if we find out who this âthornâ is, weâll leave him in a bloody heap in the middle of Waterpath.â
âMore loyal to your enemy than a potential ally?â It was the priest who spoke. All eyes went to him. âA thief is no better for stealing from a thief, but is he not doing what you all wish to do yourselves?â
âFenmere runs his neighborhood, leaves us alone,â Yessa said. âThatâs how itâs been for years.â
âWeâve got our own to worry about,â added the Rabbit captain.
âYouâve been quiet,â the priest said to Colin.
âI ainât got nothing to say,â Colin said. âFenmere got hit, and heâs all steamed. Good to know. Weâll watch ours.â He got up and went down the aisle. Jutie scrambled after him. He called out behind him. âIâve heard everything I need to hear.â
Colin couldnât keep his anger off his face, so he was glad he had his back to the rest of the gangs. This was a very bad start to the day.
He was going to have to have a long talk with his cousin.
Chapter 7
V ERANIX WOKE UP when someone pounded on the door.
âBed check!â came a shout from outside the door. âItâs dawn!â Veranix could barely move from his bed. Fortunately, Delmin got up and answered the door.
âIs this really necessary, Rellings?â he asked as he opened it.
âPeriodic checks are part of the routine, Sarren,â Rellings said. He pushed his way into the room.
âWell, weâre both here,â Delmin said.
