âI didnât know it was all going to turn out so perfectly,â she said. âIf I had, Iâd have taken the parentsâ details and sent them a copy. They were over thereââSophie gestured to the right of the photoââjust out of shot. But I had no idea. It wasnât until I checked the frames on the computer later that night that I realized what Iâd gotten.â Smiling at the memory, she added, âThis is whatâs so fantastic about photography; you never know when youâre going to create a bit ofâ¦magic.â
Josh watched her hands dance and her eyes light up as she spoke. The way her evident love for her work shone through was oddly touching.
âYou have to be good at it too,â he pointed out.
âI know.â Sophie glanced at him. âI am. But you already know that.â
There was just something about her. She wasnât like other girls. Hiding a smile, Josh said, âI do.â

Ten minutes later, they were in the car on their way to the hotel. Tula realized sheâd sprayed too much scent over herself when she saw Josh inhale, then slowly exhale and lower the driverâs window.
âIâll meet you in reception at nine tomorrow,â he said. âAnd tell you everything you need to know.â
She beamed. âDonât worry. Iâm a fast learner.â
âGood.â
âAnd thanks for giving me another chance.â
âWe needed someone. It works both ways. But I meant it when I said you mustnât let us down. If I ever catch you doing what you did last weekâ¦â
âYou wonât,â Tula assured him hurriedly. âI told you I wouldnât.â
âYes, well. If you ever miss a shift, youâd better make sure you really are sick.â He gave her a stern look of warning. âAnd hangovers donât count.â
âI know that. You just wait.â With a mischievous grin Tula said, âIâm going to be the best employee you ever had!â Whoops, the double entendre had been unintentional, but it gave him the opportunity to raise an eyebrow and make a wry, jokey comment. Because if he was changing his mind about taking her on, surely this meant there was a chance he might fancy her just a little bit?
Was it really so unreasonable to think that?
Instead, after a pause Josh said, âCan I ask you a question about Sophie?â
Okay, evidently it was unreasonable.
âWhat do you want to know?â
âAccording to Riley, she doesnât have boyfriends. Heâs never seen her with anyone. All she does is work.â
âAnd thatâs a problem?â
He shrugged. âNo, but itâs unusual.â
âYou mean you canât get over the fact that you asked her out and she turned you down?â
âNot at all,â Josh protested. âIâm just curious.â
âMaybe sheâs a lesbian.â
His eyebrows lifted a fraction. âIs she?â
Entertaining though it would be to pretend this was true, Tula couldnât bring herself to do it. She shook her head and said, âNo.â
âSo whatâs the situation?â
âWhy donât you ask her?â
âIâm asking you first.â
And there was certainly no way she was going to tell him. Tula said, âI think sheâs just concentrating on building up the business. Thatâs her number one priority right now.â
Theyâd reached Mariscombe House. Josh pulled into the parking lot, switched off the ignition, and turned to look at her. âWhich means you know, but youâre not going to tell me.â
Which in turn would probably only succeed in intensifying his curiosity. But what other choice did she have?
âMaybe it just hasnât occurred to you that you might not be as irresistible as you think,â she said.
His half smile indicated that he was aware that as far as she
