it.â
âYou have nothing to be nervous about,â Louis said as he strolled into the kitchen. âListen, I wrote this song for you.â He did a quick scat on his trumpet.
The song made Tiana sway to the beat and forget to be nervous. The jazz tune was so catchy it made her smile.
âI love that song,â Tiana said. âWill you play it tonight?â
âOf course!â Louis replied. âGiselle has never let me down, and your cooking wonât either.â He patted his trumpet. âTiana, you are the best cook in New Orleans, and Jono La Crème is gonna love this place.â
Tiana hugged Louis. He was a true friend. She pulled back and smiled up at him, realizing he was also a very tall friend!
âLouis, could you reach that large red pot on the top shelf?â she asked. She pointed to the far end of the kitchen. âI need to make jambalaya and want to use the biggest pot I have.â
âSure thing,â Louis said. He was more than happy to help out Tiana. He easily reached the heavy pot and put it down on the stove. âJust save me some of that jambalaya!â He licked his lips. âAnd some gumbo, étouffée, bread pudding, and a plateful of beignets!â
âPromise,â Tiana said, smiling. Then she spotted the kitchen clock and gasped. âI didnât realize the time! Iâve got to get down to the French Market. I need to have the freshest fish today.â
âI can go for you,â Naveen offered.
âAre you sure?â Tiana asked. âYou wouldnât mind?â
âNot at all, Princess,â her prince replied.
âI can go with you,â Louis said. âI tend to clear a crowd. That way we can get to the fish place quickly.â He swayed his head and giggled.
âThat would be fantastic,â Naveen said. âIâll need a hand with the shipment. If I know Tiana, she ordered enough fish for an entire kingdom!â He smiled at his wife.
âI would appreciate that very much,â Tiana told them. âThere should be one large crate of fish. Murray the fisherman was going to put aside the best selection for me.â
âWeâll go now,â Naveen said. He touched Tiana on the arm. âTonight is going to be great.â
Tiana went back to chopping her vegetables. She only looked up when there was a knock at the back door. âWhat are you doing here so early?â Tiana exclaimed when she saw who was standing there.
Her mother, Eudora, gave her a tight squeeze. âWhen Lottie told me the news, I had to come over right away,â she said. âJono La Crème, coming here? I wanted to help if I could.â
âEverything is happening so quickly,â Tiana said. âAnd I want the evening to be perfect.â
Touching Tianaâs cheek, her mother smiled. âOne ingredient at a time,â she said, âjust like your daddy taught you.â
Tiana was glad her mother had come early. Having her in the kitchen would help Tiana focus on her cooking.
âI brought you something,â Eudora said. She drew a large box from her bag. âFor your opening night.â
Tiana pulled a beautiful blue silk dress with sparkles all over it out of the box. Her mother was an amazing seamstress, so she always knew just what to make. âThis is beautiful,â she murmured.
âFit for a princess, donât you think?â her mother said with a smile. âI made the dress especially for you. Thereâs something else in there as well. Look.â
Tiana dug deeper into the box and pulled out a crisp, white apron trimmed with bows and a ruffle. âMama, itâs gorgeous! I love it!â
She slipped the apron on. âThis is just the thing for opening night. Thank you for everything, and for being here today.â
âI wouldnât have missed this night for anything!â she exclaimed, kissing the top of Tianaâs head. âYou
