mine were embroideredâsome elements magnified. Some just plain made up. I wasnât as bad as it began to appear.â
âSo what happened?â
âI got fired, of course. I think, all along, thatâs what Iâd wanted. I havenât been on stage or on a TV show since. Six years. Thatâs for ever in telly time.â Sheâd escaped and gone to study. It was only recently that sheâd been dragged back under. She wrinkled her nose. âExcept for repeats. They like to repeat some episodes.â She grimaced.
âWhere was your father?â
Right in the centre. âHe was my manager.â Her father had let her down. Heâd never stepped in to stop her. Never defended her. âThatâs how it all started. With me. Hannah had always wanted to actâwas dying to. But sheâd not got any jobs. Instead I got them. It was the cute little blonde girl thing,â she said cynically. âEventually Hannah did a piece in an indie film. Wasnât even paid for it. But she got spotted. They finally realised her talent. And she flew from there.â
âAnd what did you do?â
âStuck on the show for another season. Hated it and got worse in terms of behaviour.â
âWhy didnât you just quit?â
âI couldnât. We needed the money. Hannah hadnât quite hit the jackpot then, she was a slow build before becoming an overnight sensationâthatâs the way these things really work. I brought in regular money that we needed. So you can imagine how mad Dad was when they finally called time on me.â
Sheâd lost all worth. All her value. Heâd turned to Hannah. Helped Hannah. She supposed heâd had to.
âBut by then Hannah was hitting her stride?â
Caitlin nodded. âShe has that quirkiness that the camera loves. Thereâs no mistaking her for anyone else. Sheâs passionate about acting. Itâs absolutely her thing and she is incredibly good at it. She disappears for weeks when sheâs right into a part.â
âYouâre close?â
Caitlin hesitated. âSheâs very busy and Iâm working on a new phase in my life.â She read the disapproval in his eyes. âWe really didnât spend that much time together as kids. But sheâs a darling,â she rushed to add. âShe deserves all her success. And she doesnât need to be dragged down by me. It was because Hannah knows George that I got the loan of this place. She is supportive of me. But I think itâs better to keep some kind of distance.â
âYouâve shut her out?â
âNo,â she said defensively. âI just donât think she needs to have my affairs thrust in her face. She doesnât need to have her publicist deflecting questions about me. She needs to concentrate on her career and not have me as the sideshow.â
âBut that leaves you alone.â He looked at her. âBecause Iâm guessing you and your dad arenât close.â
âHeâs very busy too. Heâs still Hannahâs manager,â Caitlin said softly. âShe has a whole team these days, but heâs still very involved. And thatâs fine. Iâm a big girl. I donât need a manager. Iâm loving being in New York and being anonymous.â She glared at him, hating how exposed she felt right this instant in the face of his inscrutability. She didnât want to go any furtherânot into the nightmare of the last few months and the real reason sheâd had to run. âAnyway, you canât talk. Youâve shut out your family.â
âI havenât shut them out.â His smile went fixed.
âReally? When you wonât even go and see them in the few days you have back in the country?â
âYou think theyâd want to see me when Iâm tired and grumpy?â The smile disappeared altogether.
âWould it be so bad if they saw you
