backstage to tell you.â
Sadie smiled. âSo youâre not getting divorced?â
âDivorced? Where did you ever get such an idea?â Mr. Harris replied. âSometimes parents fight when theyâre stressed, honey. It doesnât mean weâre getting divorced.â
âWeâre sorry if we upset you. Weâre going to try our very best to work things outâ¦together.â Mrs. Harris squeezed her husbandâs hand and smiled. âBut for now, you girls have a cupcake battle to win!â
âDad, can you be our master builder? And Mom, can you be our extra assistant?â Sadie asked. She handed her mother a purple PLC apron.
âWe would love to!â her parents said, hugging her.
Sadie stretched out on a big sheet of plywood and lay down on it so Lexi could trace her outline. âYou are way too tall!â Lexi laughed. âMy hand is getting tired drawing you!â
âThe plan is to cut two of these out and then Lexi will paint one to look like a man, the other to look like a woman,â Kylie explained to Sadieâs father. âThen weâll need to build some shelves so it looks like theyâre holding the cupcakes in their hands.â
âGot it,â said Mr. Harris. âAnd I can put them both on a rolling track so they come together with a light push.â
âWe still have 500 cupcakes to bake!â Sadie remembered. âAnd the clock is ticking down!â
âI got the chocolateâ¦â said Jenna.
âIâm on the peanut butter,â said Kylie.
âAnd weâll need a third group thatâs chocolate with peanut butter fillingâI can do that!â said Delaney.
âWaitâ¦Sadie, how many of each type of cupcake do we need?â Kylie asked. âWhatâs the equation?â
Sadie bristled: âHow should I know?â Really? Did Kylie have to throw math at her now, when they were all under so much pressure?
âThink, Sadie. You can do it. And we need to know how many of each flavor to bake.â
Sadie pictured the 500 cupcakes divided into three groups. âMake 166 chocolate and 166 peanut butter. Thatâs almost 14 dozen of each. Then letâs do 168 chocolate and peanut butter swirl cupcakes. So 166 + 166 + 168 = 500.â
Kylie grinned. âAwesome, Sadie. Weâre on it!â
By the time the first coat of paint had dried on their display, the cupcakes were coming out of the ovens.
âHow are we doing on time?â asked Sadie. She had already piped five dozen chocolate cupcakes with chocolate fudge.
âLess than an hour left,â Lexi sighed. âIâm getting nervous. Weâre so outnumbered!â
âJust keep painting and piping,â said Mr. Harris. âIâll get this track working.â But as much he pushed and pulled, the two figures refused to roll together.
âI think the weight of the large shelves is slowing them down,â he explained. âWe need bigger wheels.â
Just then, Sadie had a brilliant idea. âDad, what about my skateboard?â
âThat might work,â he said, unscrewing the wheels from the board and attaching them to the display. He gave a push and the two figures glided gracefully together in the center.
âAwesome!â Sadie cheered. âNow letâs get those cupcakes on!â
The girls formed an assembly line, passing the cupcakes from Jenna and Lexi down to Delaney, Kylie, and finally Mrs. Harris and Sadie to put on the shelves. âKeep âem coming. Keep âem coming!â Sadie coached. âFaster! Faster!â
Jerry was pacing back and forth in front of the giant kitchen clock.
âThree minutesâ¦two minutesâ¦one minute left!â the host called. âHurry!â
As a buzzer sounded, Sadie placed the last of the 500 cupcakes on the display.
âItâs really amazing,â Mr. Harris said. âA masterpiece if I ever saw
