daughter had gone out with other young men through the years, but she felt the same way about Anson.
âI believe this conversation is leading up to something,â Zach said.
âIâd like to ask your permission to marry Allison,â Anson said quickly.
Zach leaned back on the sofa. Heâd known this was coming, but hadnât thought it would be so soon. âAllison still has a year of law school left.â
âI know. Weâve talked about that and sheâs applied to law schools in the Washington, D.C., area.â
Zach arched his brows. âShe has, has she?â Apparently, this had been an ongoing discussion between them. âSo Allisonâs already accepted your proposal?â
âNo, sir,â Anson said. Then he nodded. âWell, yes. I realize speaking to you about this is just formality, but itâs important to me.â
Zach sent him an encouraging smile.
âAllison wanted me to give her the ring when she picked me up at the airport. I told her I wanted to talk to you and Mrs. Cox first.â
Zach could bet his daughter hadnât been keen on that. He approved, though. He liked Ansonâs old-fashioned sense of protocol and his respect for both Allison and her family.
âRosie!â Zach called his wife. âCould you come here for a minute? Allison, you, too.â
âSure.â
Allison came into the other room, holding her motherâs hand.
âIt seems that Anson here would like our permission to marry our daughter.â
Rosie turned to look at Allison. âBut you havenât finished school yet andâ¦youâre both so young.â
âTheyâve taken both matters into account and still want to get married. Allison will continue her schooling in D.C.â
âOh.â
âWhat do you think?â Zach asked Rosie.
âWellâ¦yes, of course. I would welcome Anson into the family with open arms.â
âOh, thank you, Mom.â Allison kissed her motherâs cheek and then hurried across the room to her father.
âHold on a minute,â Zach said, stopping her. âI havenât given my consent.â
âDaddy!â
Wearing a huge grin, Zach stood and hugged his daughter, and then Anson. âI couldnât imagine a son-in-law Iâd rather have. You both have our blessing.â Zach was confident in the strength of this relationship, despite their age. Theyâd proven their commitment to each other. Heâd miss his daughter, but the family was close and theyâd see her frequently.
âWhatâs going on in here?â Eddie asked, returning to the living room.
âAnson and I are engaged.â
âCool,â Eddie said.
âWeâd like a June wedding, and then Iâll move to Washington, D.C., to be with Anson.â
Eddie shook his head. âI donât know about Mom and Dad having an empty nest.â
âHey, it hasnât been a problem so far,â Zach told him.
âBut it could be.â Eddie seemed intent on making his case. âAllisonâs going to be on the other side of the country, and Iâll be away at school.â
Rosie frowned and looked at Zach. He shrugged, unsure what his son was getting at.
âMom,â Eddie said. âYou need someone to mother. And, Dad, who are you going to boss around? Everyone knows Mom wonât put up with that for long.â
Allison laughed, but Zach was less amused.
âNow, just a minute, young manââ
Eddie interrupted him. âIâve come up with the perfect solution.â
âYou have?â
Eddie nodded. He turned away for a moment and stepped into the hallway, then came back carrying a basketâwith a puppy curled up inside, fast asleep.
âMerry Christmas, Mom and Dad.â
âA puppy!â Rosie said, lifting the sleeping pup from his warm bed and holding him close. âHeâs adorable!â
âWhat a great idea.â
