said, âand it was dark near the house. The thief managed to get away before we could stop him . . . or her.â
Officer Brody gave his partner a grateful look.
âDid the thief get the brooch?â the police chief asked.
âNo,â Nancy answered. âThe thief never even got near the clock. The brooch is inside my dadâs safe.â
âGood. That means we have another chance,â Chief McGinnis said. âBut weâre going to have to play it differently this time.â
Nancy looked at the police chief. âYou mean, since the thief didnât get what he came for, heâll probably try again.â
âYes,â replied Chief McGinnis. âBut only if it looks as if weâve called off the surveillance.â He thought for a moment. âMaybe we should have done this in the first place.â
âDone what?â Nancy asked.
âPlaced my officers inside the house. That way, we can catch the thief as soon as he breaks in. It will be a lot less obvious from the outside, too, since the thief has seen the surveillance car.â
Hannah nodded. âIâd feel safer with the police indoors, as long as there isnât any shooting.â
âThe use of guns shouldnât be necessary,â Chief McGinnis told Hannah. He turned to Officers Walkerand Daniel. âYouâll relieve Rudinsky and Brody. Weâll take all of the cars back to the station.â
âDo you think the thief will come back tonight?â asked Carson Drew.
âI doubt it,â said the chief, âbut I donât want to take any chances. Rudinsky, Brody, go home and get some rest. Youâll report back here tomorrow afternoon.
âYes, sir,â Sergeant Rudinsky said.
âPleasant dreams, everyone,â Chief McGinnis said.
Nancy, her father, and Hannah headed back into the house, accompanied by Officers Walker and Daniel.
âSo we meet again,â Rob Walker said to Nancy. âYouâve had quite a day.â
âIâll say,â said Jean Daniel. âThat was a lucky break you got this afternoon.â
Nancy tried to signal to the officers not to discuss the bridge incident, but it was too late.
âWhat lucky break?â Carson Drew asked, giving Nancy a curious look.
Nancy sighed. There was no point in keeping the story from him any longer. âWe had a close call this afternoon on the River Heights Bridge,â she said simply.
Hannah gasped. âIs that what Bess meant about your luck running out?â
Nancy nodded, then told them the whole story. She tried to play down the dangerous parts, but there was no fooling either one of them.
âI knew it,â Hannah said. âI knew you were hiding something.â
Carson Drew gave his daughter a stern look. âYou should have told us this before.â
âI didnât want you to worry unnecessarily,â Nancy told him. âAnd it was already over. Telling you wouldnât have changed anything.â
âI guess not,â said Carson, âbut we worry anyway.â He wrapped his arms tightly around his daughter. âYou could have been killed today.â
âIâm sorry, Dad. I promise Iâll keep you up to date about everything else that happens.â
Officers Walker and Daniel made a quick search of the house. âWeâll keep watch downstairs,â Officer Walker said. âYou folks get yourselves a good nightâs sleep.â
âThereâs no chance in the world Iâll sleep tonight,â Hannah said. âIf this thief is capable of running Nancy off the road, who knows what else heâd do to get the brooch.â
âWeâll make sure you never have to find out,â Officer Daniel said. âYouâre perfectly safe as long as weâre here.â
âThank you again,â Nancy said to the officers. âGood night, everybody.â
The last thing Nancy heard as she headed up
