because Daed is so against it.â Cal frowned. âBut I donât know why. Lots of people donât think itâs wrong to sing. Well, as long as itâs not for vainglory.â
âVainglory,â she said as she rinsed a glass. âThatâs the problem.â
âBut winning money to help Daedâis that vainglory?â
She wasnât sure, but by the time she finished the last dish, Cal had very nearly convinced her. âYouâre very persuasive,â she admitted as she hung up the apron.
âCome on, Katrina, letâs go speak to him now,â Cal urged.
âHeâs probably asleep.â She hoped he was.
âLetâs go see.â
They tiptoed up to Daedâs room, and to Katrinaâs surprise, he was still awake and actually looked as if the pain pill had helped. âHow are you doing, Daed?â she asked gently.
âBetter,â he told her.
âArenât you glad you listened to Katrina and took your pill?â Cal said boldly.
â Ja, ja. That was a good thing.â Daed let out a sigh of relief. âI am a stubborn man. I know.â
âWe want to talk to you about something,â Cal began.
âJa?â Daed looked at them with interest.
âWe know you need your back surgery, Daed,â Cal said in earnest. âAnd Katrina has a way to earn the money for it.â
Daed looked skeptical, but he listened as Cal quickly explained the idea. Of course, Cal didnât get all the facts straight, but Katrina didnât think it mattered since she was certain that Daed would reject this crazy plan.
âItâs Katrinaâs rumspringa ,â Cal said finally. âYou know she loves to sing. This is something she needs to get out of her system . . . so that she can come back to us and commit to the church.â
Daedâs brows arched. âYou want to be baptized?â
âShe and I are both considering it,â Cal told him. âBut Katrina needs to do this first.â
âYou both want to be baptized?â Daedâs voice was hopeful.
âI do,â Cal assured him. âI want to get married someday too. But most of all I want you to get well first.â
Daedâs eyes softened as he looked from Cal to Katrina. She wasnât sure if it was Calâs persuasion or the medication. âI want to hear you,â Daed said slowly.
âYou want me to sing?â Katrina was shocked.
âJa.â His eyelids looked heavy.
âSing âPuff, the Magic Dragon,ââ Cal urged.
Right there in the little bedroom, Katrina began to sing. To her surprise, Daedâs face lit up in a peaceful smile and he tapped his fingers on the quilt, listening as she sang the entire song.
âBeautiful,â he proclaimed when she finished.
She was too stunned to react.
âSo you give her your blessing in this?â Cal asked eagerly.
â Ja , ja , Katrina has my blessing.â
âDaed?â Katrina peered curiously into his sleepy eyes.
âYou are like my mamm, Katrina. Ja . Go and sing.â Then he closed his eyes and began to quietly snore.
Katrina looked at Cal, wondering if sheâd heard this right. But she could tell by her brotherâs huge grin that she wasnât mistaken. Together they tiptoed from the room and quietly slipped downstairs, but once they were back in the kitchen, Cal hugged her and let out a triumphant whoop. âWe did it, Katrina. We got Daedâs blessing.â
She was still too shocked to react. âDoes this really mean Iâm going to do this?â
âYou want to, donât you?â
She put a hand to her mouth, trying to suppress the wildly happy feeling rushing through her. â Ja ,â she exclaimed. âI do want to do this. I really truly do!â
For the rest of the morning, Katrina was so happy she never stopped singing. She sang as she finished the kitchen choresâeven doing more
