intentionally. The man said something, I donât even know what he said, but the woman gets all snitty and goes,
It ruins it for me when you talk.
â
Jules laughed. âWow.â
âYeah.â Robin was finally smiling, too, but it was still rueful. âEver since then, the idea of having sex in pig masks has been, like, the biggest soft-on I can think of. It just came out of my mouth when I was
talking to the reporter from The Boston Globe.
â He was instantly back in agony-land. âGod, I fucked up. He told me he was new in Artâs office, and I believed him.â
âWhy wouldnât you?â Jules put his arms around him again. âHe came into our home, and he lied to youâ¦Sweetie, really, itâs going to be okay. Come on. Letâs get you inside and cleaned up. Whatâs done is done.â He pulled Robin to his feet.
Dolphina was hovering, right by the front door. She opened it as she saw them coming. âIâm so sorry,â she said. âI should haveââ
âNot your fault,â Jules cut her off. âWeâall of usâshould have been ready for this kind of thing. Itâs not going to happen againâletâs just focus on that.â
âI kind of liked him,â Robin said. âWill.â
The stupid thing was, Jules had kind of liked him, too.
Dolphina surprised them both. âI hate his freaking guts.â She looked at Jules. âI photocopied his driverâs license in case you really do want to kill him.â
âYou threatened to
kill
him?â Robin asked.
âKill who?â Sam had wandered out of the living room, clearly in search of them. âDang, whoâd you mud wrestle, Boy Wonder?â
âRobin got locked in the basement,â Dolphina told Sam. âRight after he unwittingly talked to a reporter who crashed the party.â
Sam looked at Jules. Thankfully he didnât say anything to make Robin feel any worse than he obviously already felt. But the look in his eye was pure
here we goâ¦
âWell, go and de-mud, the both of you,â he said. âAlyssa says itâs time to open your presents, and you donât want to get her mad. Although sheâd be a good team member for the murder youâre planning.â
âNo oneâs going to kill anyone,â Jules announced.
âI have to take a drug test so I can send the results to
The Boston Globe,
â Robin reminded them. âWho wants to come watch me pee into a cup? It needs to be someone besides Jules, because thatâs just not
quite
humiliating enough.â
And now the look that Sam flashed Jules was sympathetic. âIâll be your witness.â
âThanks,â Jules told his friend.
âBefore you go upstairs, I think you need to know,â Dolphina said, and they all stopped and looked at her. She took a deep breath. âThe President and Mrs. Bryant are planning to attend your wedding.â
Jules started to laugh. Of course they were.
Sam said it all, in one heartfelt word that he Texified into two syllables. âShee-yit.â
âYou said they wouldnât come,â Robin said, looking at Jules.
âOops,â Jules said.
âItâs a huge honor.â Dolphina tried to bright side it.
âBut you didnât want a big wedding.â Robin was worried, not about himself, but about Jules. âItâs going to have to be big now. Thereâll be Secret Service andââ
âI donât care.â Jules interrupted him. âI just want to marry you. I just want to stand up in a church, and tell everyone that Iâm going to love you forever. I donât give a shit how many dozen whirling ninjas with fiery batons are spinning in circles around us.â
âWell, thatâs good,â Sam pointed out. âBecause the ninjasâtheyâre working up their routine, starting right about now.â
