town.â
âThen again it might.â Bailey let out a giant sigh. âMaybe we should just go back to the hotel.â
âYeah. We need to gather more evidence before we point fingers at people.â
âLetâs take the shuttle back. Iâm tired of walking.â
âMe, too.â Kate hooked Biscuitâs leash on him and set him down. âItâs a wonder you didnât get trampled by that huge elk or the stampeding herd,â she said in his pointy little ear. âYou are so brave!â
âItâs amazing none of us did,â Bailey added. âGod must be working overtime keeping an eye out for us.â
âAs usual.â
The girls joined a couple of people who were waiting at the shuttle stop.
Kate plopped down on the bench. âWe should get in touch with the other Camp Club Girls when we get back.â
âYeah, theyâll want to hear about our adventure.â
A voice interrupted their conversation, and Justin and Joeâs grandma joined them under the shelter. âOh, hi girls!â
âMrs. Perkins! What are you doing here?â
âIâve been doing a little shopping this morning.â She held up her bags as proof. The shuttle pulled to the curb and the group boarded. Bailey and Kate sat across the aisle from Grandma Perkins and her shopping bags. Biscuit sniffed them curiously.
âWhat have you girls been up to?â Grandma Perkins asked.
âWe went for a hike this morning and now weâre heading back to the hotel.â
âJustin and Joe were hiking today, too!â
Bailey bit her lower lip. âYes, we saw them.â
âMy stomach is growling.â Kate put her hand on her tummy.
Bailey, relieved at the change of subject, looked at her watch. âThatâs because itâs lunchtime. Itâs almost twelve oâclock.â
âGuess we timed that right.â
When the shuttle parked in front of the hotel, Bailey, Kate, Biscuit, and Grandma Perkins got off.
âOh, Mrs. Perkins! Did Mr. Perkins win the bugling contest?â Kate asked.
âNo, someone else won,â Grandma Perkins replied.
Bailey could hardly believe her ears. âThatâs impossible! He was the best one there!â
âWell, Iâm glad you thought so, but the judges didnât agree.â Grandma Perkinsâs voice was kind. âItâs all right. He just did it for fun. He didnât care if he won.â
âI bet Justin and Joe were really disappointed,â Bailey said quietly as they walked down the hotel sidewalk.
âYes, they were.â Mrs. Perkins shook her head. âEspecially Justin.â
Bailey suddenly stopped and gasped.
âWhatâs the matter?â Kateâs eyes followed Baileyâs line of vision toward the old historic building.
âI thought I saw a ghost in that window.â
âBailey! You know better than that!â Kate laughed but then paused. âYouâre as white as a sheet!â
âWhich window?â Grandma Perkins asked.
âThe fourth floor, four windows over from the right.â
âAh, yes. The famous room 408. And what did this ghost look like?â
âLike a cowboy. He had a cowboy hat and a mustache and he just stared out the window then faded off to the left.â
âThat must be the old cowboy ghost we read about in the brochure!â Kate kept her eyes on the window.
âLegend has it that a guest thought he saw the same thing years back,â Grandma Perkins explained. âBut the front desk confirmed that the room was vacant. They said no one could have stood in that window because it was over the bathroom sink, and he couldnât have faded to the left because it would have taken him through the wall. That was the first reported sighting of the cowboy ghost. Many people have seen him since then, but only at this time of the year.â
âAre you telling me I saw a real
