think Jesse would have usurped Fatherâs Day from you if he could have?â Maggie asked finally.
âYes.â Will answered without hesitation.
âBut he didnât.â
âNo.â
âWhy do you think he didnât?â
âBecause itâs Fatherâs Day.â
âIs the visitation written out in the divorce papers?â
Will gave that consideration and shook his head. âNo. But it only seems fair. Barbara gets them on Motherâs Day.â
âBecause you allow it.â
âYes.â Then Will understood. âAnd she allowed me to have them today.â
âIn spite of the fact that Steven and Wren have a new father figure in the house. This was Jesseâs first Fatherâs Day with them as their stepdad. It was probably kind of a big thing to him.â
âBecause itâs all about him. Only today wasnât, because Barbara didnât let that happen.â
Maggie nodded.
âMaybe I shouldnât feel as angry at Barbara as I have been for not having Steven and Wren all day.â
âYouâre going to feel the way you feel, Will,â Maggie said. âI just want you to understand that you had something good todayâseveral hours of almost stress-free time with your kidsâthat could have been much harder.â
âBarbara wanted me to be with Steven and Wren today.â
âI think so. But that canât have set well with her new husband.â
âBecause itâs not all about him.â
âExactly. But even if theyâd been there, he wouldnât have appreciated them as much as you did. The emotional ties and investments arenât there.â
Thinking back over the way Steven and Wren had reluctantly left him when heâd dropped them off, Will realized that what Maggie was saying was true. It helped a little.
âFatherâs Day has gotten complicated,â he said.
âBut not impossible.â
âNo.â And please, God, never let it be impossible. Will relaxed a little more and glanced at the clock on the wall. âHave you eaten?â
âNot yet.â
âNeither have I. I could order Chinese in.â
âSure.â
Even as Will reached for the phone on his desk, though, it rang. He lifted the handset and identified himself.
âCommander,â a no-nonsense voice on the other end of the connection said, âIâm Special Agent-in-Charge Scott Urlacher of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. If I may, I need a moment of your time.â

Will covered the mouthpiece and looked at Maggie. âFBI. SAC Urlacher?â
Maggie shook her head, letting him know the name meant nothing to her.
âWhat can I do for you, Agent Urlacher?â Will hit the speakerphone button, motioning for Maggie to stay quiet.
âDo you know a man named Victor Gant?â Urlacher responded.
Will didnât hesitate about answering, but he was instantly wary. âI do.â
âYouâve got paper out on his son, Bobby Lee.â
Will agreed to that as well, wondering why the FBI agent had called him.
âIâve got a situation I was hoping you could help me with,â Urlacher said.
âIf I can,â Will replied. He wasnât in the habit of making blind promises.
âVictor Gant is in a bad bit of business out here in Charlotte,â Special Agent-in-Charge Urlacher said. âHe runs with a local biker gang.â
âThe Purple Royals,â Will replied as he gazed at the file Maggie had opened up on his computer in front of him. âHe doesnât just run with them. He leads it.â
âYes, sir. Our intel suggests that the Purple Royals deal meth and weapons.â
The notes in the folder agreed with that assessment. Will didnât say anything.
âWeâve had an undercover officer on-site in Charlotte for months,â Urlacher said.
