all heâd said was, âPA needed on location for new reality / survival program. Crap pay, great travel opportunities.â Heâd been hoping for maybe a beach bum kid, some twenty-something wannabe pro surfer with a taste for adventure and an up-for-it attitude. A hard worker, but relaxed and adaptable, competent with a camera and mics. Someone like himself, whose only dream was to get paid to travel and have fun. The woman who arrived that morning wasnât any of those things, as best Ty could tell.
âTell me about your experience, Missâ¦Somersby,â he said, squinting at the take-out menu heâd scribbled her name on the previous evening when sheâd phoned. He tried to sound professional, but he really had no idea what he was doing. Heâd never expected the channel to pick up the pilot heâd taped on a climbing acquaintanceâs beer-fueled dare. But a rival network had recently begun production on a similar series, and theyâd been eager to try to beat the competition out of the gate. That Ty demanded little in the way of budget, schedule or staff had clinched the deal.
âI can do anything, Mr. Tyler,â Kate said, her smile all unnaturally white even teeth framed in lip gloss. She took a seat on the hotel roomâs desk chair and Ty sat on the edge of the bed. âIâm highly organized and have no personal obligations, so Iâm at your complete disposal, twenty-four hours a day.â
âWell, thatâs certainlyâ¦accommodating. How old are you?â he asked.
âTwenty-six.â
âDid you recently graduate from college?â
âNo,â she said, and Ty noticed her bubbling energy diminish by a degree. âI didnât go to college.â
âWell, thatâs not a problem. Just making small talk. Do you like the woods?â
âI grew up in Massachusetts,â she said, which meant nothing to Ty, literally hours off a plane from Sydney. âIâve been camping and hiking before,â she offered.
âYou like camping?â
âSure, itâs fine. Like I said, Iâll do anything.â
Ty took a deep breath, knowing he needed to scare this girl straight, get her to back off and spare them both the embarrassment of an outright rejection. âAre you strong? Could you, say, carry a fifteen-pound camera on your shoulder for an hour at a time?â
âIâm sure I could,â she said brightly, unruffled. âI go to the gym every morning.â
âHow about asthma? Allergies? Food requirements? This job demands a lot of exotic travel. You okay with centipedes and snakes and things?â
âI can handle anything you need me to.â
Ty tried another angle. âWhat about family? Friends? Youâd have to be away for months at a time.â
Her smile was tight. âIâm not particularly attached to anyone, Mr. Tyler.â
ââTyâ is fine.â
âSo is âKate.ââ
âRight, Iâll be honest with you, I donât think this is going to work out.â
Her brows pinched together. âWhy not?â
âWell, this job is really demanding, physically, for one.â
âIâm sure youâre not implying that I canât do this because Iâm a woman.â
Damn, was he? He didnât think so, but perhaps subconsciously, Tyâd pictured his PA as a man, that was true. âNo, of course not.â
âIâm glad to hear that.â
âYes, well⦠Iâm just saying, this jobâs going to be very taxing, and the filmingâs going to be on location for days at a time. Maybe weeks. There could be wild animals and rough weather, even simulated shipwrecks or arctic conditionsâ¦â
âThat sounds just fine.â Kate offered another million-dollar smile, as if heâd just broken it to her that her company car wouldnât be the color sheâd hoped.
Ty laughed tightly,
