family could have kidnapped Elana, then we have to be sure no one finds out you hired me. Whoever did this thinks he has gotten away with it. He needs to believe that you think so as well. Did you bring the photographs?â
âYes.â Elvin handed over the manila folder with pictures and names of his family members. âWe found the most current onespossible. Some I got off of Facebook, but as you see, some of them are still pretty old. I drew a diagram to help you keep track of our family tree. It gets pretty wild because my grandfather had children outside of his marriage with my grandmother and she had others before and after him.â
âIâve seen worse.â B.K. quickly scanned the material. âLooks like Iâll have some homework tonight.â
âWhat about Herbert Greenfield?â asked Troy. âI thought it was strange for him not to be there.â
âThatâs the stepfather, right? Oh, donât worry. Iâm checking up on him. As a matter of fact, Iâm going to Hitchcock to meet with him next week.â
âHitchcockâ¦â Troy thought aloud, searching his mind for its location. Then it finally registered. âThatâs a small city between here and Galveston off of I-Forty-five, right?â The same interstate where Elanaâs body was found!
âI know.â B.K. leered.
âThatâs a strange coincidence,â Troy said more to Elvin as confirmation that his inquiry into Herbertâs presence wasnât too far-fetched. He turned his attention back to B.K. âYou think heâs connected to Elanaâs disappearance?â
âMaybe. In my book, everyone is a suspect until proven otherwise. I canât make connections where there are none, but I promise to leave no stone uncovered.â
Everyone is a suspect until proven otherwise. What was that supposed to mean? Was B.K. implying that he would look closer into him? Is that what all this hypnosis crap is about? Troy could not get offended. He understood the process of eliminating suspects. âFair enough,â he responded.
âIf thereâs nothing else, weâll touch base after I get Shaunaâsreport. Elvin, please be sure to have your mom call me. I would prefer to be the one to ask her about undergoing forensic memory recall, if you donât mind.â
âSure, thatâs not a problem.â
âThe sooner Iâm able to meet with her, the better. Maybe she can come on Wednesday while yâall are with Shauna.â
âI donât want her to come by herself. Iâll see if my wife will ride with her. The boys can stay at the house alone.â Elvin seemed to be thinking out loud more so than responding to B.K.
âI can always ask my mom to come with Lilly. Iâm sure she wonât mind.â
âYâall figure it out and have Lilly call me. If I donât hear from her by Wednesday morning, Iâll contact her.â
âOkay,â replied Elvin.
âWell, I think weâre done for right now. Elvin already has my card; let me give you one, too, Troy. If you can think of anything else or you have any questions, give me a call day or night.â
âI would like a copy of the autopsy report, if you donât mind,â Troy stated, taking B.K.âs card and putting it in his jacket pocket without looking at it. âAnd any photographs of Elanaâs body when she was found. Basically, I want a copy of everything you have. Not to step on your toes, but to analyze the evidence for myself.â
B.K. smirked and paused a moment before responding. âGive me a few minutes.â He grabbed a file from his desk and left the office.
âWhat do you think of him?â
âI think he is a bit smug.â
âSo youâre basically meeting an older version of yourself, huh?â Elvin teased.
âAww, whatever. I actually like him. It shows me that heâs confidentin his
