destruction was this ragtag bunch, I thought, then Oz was in even bigger trouble than Iâd thoughtâbut I kept my mouth shut. Gert was probably reading my mind anyway. âWeâre witches, too,â Mombi continued. âBut for years, weâve kept to ourselves, letting our more attention-hungry sisters steal the spotlight. When Glinda brought Dorothy back to Oz, we knew it was time to come together to find a way to stop her.â
âYou said you knew about me already,â I said to Nox. âBack at Glindaâs palace. What does that mean? Does it have something to do with yourâOrder?â
âWe have eyes everywhere, including in the Emerald City,â he said. âWeâve known about you for a long time. Youâre part fairy, Jellia. Itâs why Glinda thought she could use you to tap into Ozâs magic.â
âBut how could I be part fairy?â I asked.
âItâs not common,â Gert countered, âbut itâs certainly possible. Why do you think your magic is so powerful? Youâve always been different, and you know that.â
I struggled to process what Gert was saying. I did have stronger magic than mostâI knew that. But how could this be? How had I never known?
âDid Ozma know?â I said finally.
âIâm sure she did,â Nox said. âAnyone with enough magic can recognize your power, Jellia.â
âWhy didnât she ever tell me?â
âOzma has always had her own reasons for doing what she does,â Glamora said. âThe fairies arenât like the other citizens of Oz. They literally are Oz; their magic is Ozâs magic. If she didnât tell you, it was because she felt it was for the good of Oz. But everything is different now. You have to learn the extent of your powers if you want to help send Dorothy back to the Other Place and heal Ozma.â
âYouâre not any better than Glinda,â I said, hurt surging up in my chest. âYou only helped me out because you think I can do something for you.â
âNot because you can do something for us,â Mombi said curtly. âBecause you can do something for Oz.â
âI know this is difficult, dear,â Gert said, her gentle voice countering Mombiâs gruffness. âBut these are desperate times. Weâve protected you because youâre special, itâs true. But you have the power to help us heal Ozâto bring Ozma back and restore the rightful order. You canât choose who you are. But you can choose what youâll become.â
âBut I donât even know how to use my magic,â I said. âI never even knew what I was. How can I help you?â
âNox is our eyes and ears in Glindaâs palace,â Gert replied. âAnd you can do that work for us in the Emerald City. No one is as close to Dorothy as you are.â
âAnd Glinda hasnât told her about your magic,â Glamora added. âAs far as she knows, youâre just as ordinary as anyone else in Ozâif anyone in Oz can be said to be truly ordinary.â
âIf Glinda recognized me as part fairy, why hasnât Dorothy? She has magic, too,â I pointed out.
âDorothy doesnât have magic of her own,â Gert said. âAll her power comes from those infernal shoes of Glindaâs. Dorothy is learning how to use that power for her own ends, but for now Glinda can still control her.â
I sat for a moment, digesting what theyâd told me. âYouâre asking me to risk my life when I donât even know what youâre trying to do,â I said finally.
âThat part is simple,â Mombi said. âThe witch is going to burn.â Everyone else at the table fell silent. Mombi slapped her hands on the table and heaved herself to her feet, trundling around the table to where I sat. âListen, little girl,â she said, grabbing my chin and forcing me to meet
