be.â
âAnd your father?â
âHe doesnât know. I told Mama I would tell him later. Iâm not ready to tell him yet, Ron.â
âTell who what?â Tia asked as she and Yvonne came in. Roni looked at Kayla and she looked back.
âWhat are yâall talking about?â Yvonne sat in the chair across from Kayla.
âNothing. Have either of you heard of knocking?â Roni asked quickly.
âFor what? I got a key.â Tia shook her head. She looked too cute in a white cotton short set. âYou got any juice, Ron?â
âIn the fridge. I think itâs some in there. Use one of the glasses on the top shelf.â
âWhat arenât you ready to tell, Kayla? Geno and Craig obviously already know about each other.â
Yvonne giggled. Kayla decided she would just go ahead and tell them about the baby. There was no point in keeping it from them. They were, after all, her best friends.
âIâm pregnant,â she announced. The sound of breaking glass startled all of them.
âTia!â Roni yelled, looking at the broken pieces on the floor.
âSorry.â Tia continued to stare at Kayla as Roni picked up the mess.
âWhat did you say?â Yvonne wanted to make sure she heard correctly.
âIâm having a baby,â Kayla confirmed.
âWow. Is that why Geno was at your house?â Tia questioned.
âNo, itâs not his baby.â Kayla knew what the next question would be, so she answered before it was asked. âItâs Craigâs.â
âKayla,â was all Yvonne said.
âOkay, Iâm confused. When did you sleep with Craig?â Tia reached for another glass.
âValentineâs night,â Kayla told her.
âWhere was I?â she continued.
âObviously not having as much fun as she was,â Roni laughed. Tia gave her a high five.
âWhat are you gonna do?â Yvonne had been quiet the entire time. Kayla expected this reaction from her.
âI am gonna be a mother,â Kayla told her. She fought the urge to look away from her girlfriend; she knew she had to keep her pride.
âSo, youâre gonna have a baby by him ? You donât even know him like that, Kayla.â Yvonne continued, âYou mean you slept with him without using protection, Kayla? Thatâs so irresponsible.â
âI know it is and Iâm not trying to make any excuses, Yvonne. Iâm accepting responsibility now, though.â Kayla felt the tears swell in her eyes.
âItâs too late to be responsible. Youâre about to have a baby by practically a stranger you met in the club , of all places.â
âHold up, Yvonne. Youâre outta line, girl.â Roni stopped her.
âSheâs right, Von. You canât judge her like that.â Tia added, âYouâre out there living it up too.â
âThe only difference between you and her is that she got caught. Shit happens. But that doesnât mean I love her any less or think Iâm better than her. I thought I knew you better than that, Von,â Roni frowned.
âIâm so sorry, Von. My life is so screwed up right now that sometimes I feel backed into a corner with nowhere to turn.â Kayla cried.
âThatâs your choice, Kayla, because you can always turn to us. We have always been there for you.â Tia reached out to Kayla.
âAnd I need you to be there for me, Von. Be here for me right now. Please.â Kayla put her head in her hands.
âI am here for you, Kayla.â She felt her friend reach and rub her back. The women embraced each other and Kayla knew she would be okay.
âHappy Motherâs Day, Mama.â
âHi, Baby. I told you Iâd call you. How you feeling?â
âIâm fine, Ma. I wanted to call because Iâm about to go to the store and I didnât want to miss you. You know how you think Iâm dodging your calls.â Kayla
