how can you be my friend?â
âIn time youâll see that I donât mean you any harm, Armandine, comma, Robert.â
âI told you before, Iâm not Armandine, comma, Robert,â Edsel protested. âIâm Edsel Grizzler. Or Grizzler, comma, Edsel.â
There was a slight pause. Then the voice said, âOur tests confirm that you are last name Armandine, first name Robert.â
âTests? What tests?â
The voice went on. âPerhaps youâre wrong when you call yourself Edsel Grizzler. The previous two certainly werenât.â
âNo, they were Kenny Sampson and Hoagy Wendl. Or Sampson, comma, Kenny and Wendl, comma, Hoagy. I guess,â Edsel added.
âYes, it appears they came here by mistake. Their reactions were regrettable,â said the figure. âThey werenât meant to be here.â
âBut I am?â
âOf course. Youâre perfect. And the confusion over your name is completely understandable.â
âIâm glad someone understands it,â Edsel muttered.
âMy tonal detectors show that youâre using sarcasm,â said the figure. âPlease donât. It simply serves to confuse matters.â
âNo kidding,â Edsel replied. âHey, am I dreaming?â
âNo.â
âUnconscious?â
âNo.â
âDead?â
âYouâre not dead.â
âIn that case, can you tell me where I am, why Iâm here, and how I can get back to where I came from? Please?â
âYou want to return?â
âWell yes, of course I want to return! I want to go home! Iâm supposed to be grounded. My parents will kill me if they know Iâve ⦠come here.â
âAllow me to answer your questions in the order that you asked them,â said the silver figure. âFirst, youâre in Verdada.â
âVerdada? And where is that, exactly?â
âNaturally itâs here, exactly. Youâre in Verdada, so Verdada is here. Exactly.â
âI see,â said Edsel.
âNo, you donât,â replied the figure, quite correctly. âSecond, youâre here to aid us in our main objective, which is to return all Lost Things to their rightful places.â
âLost things like me,â Edsel said crossly.
âYou will revisit that thought,â the voice said. âAnd third, you can choose to return to what you call âHomeâ at any time.â
âGood. Then I want to go home,â Edsel said.
âVery well.â
âSo can I go now?â Edsel asked, taking a step towards the Egg.
âNo.â
âBut you saidââ
âI said that you could choose to return Home at any time,â the figure corrected him. âAnd you have just chosen to do so. But you canât actually go just yet.â
âWhy not?â
âBecause you donât know what it is youâve chosen.â And before Edsel had a chance to argue, the figure turned its back and pointed towards the curved wall. As it did so, an opening simply and silently appeared in the wall. âFollow me.â
âWait â why should I? I donât even know your name,â Edsel said, remembering the Stranger Danger brochure his mother had once left lying on his pillow.
âIf my name is so important, you can call me Man.â
âOkay,â said Edsel, who, having worked through fear, panic, bewilderment, confusion and anger, had finally settled on blank acceptance. Whatever this was all about, he seemed to have little choice but to see it through.
âDo my facial features frighten you?â Man asked.
âYou donât have any facial features,â Edsel replied. âAnd yeah, itâs a bit weird, your face being all blank. I know it frightened Hoagy.â
âIf I showed you what I really looked like, I think it might frighten you more,â Man said. âBut you have to trust me.â
âWhy do
