“We should probably head back to the base soon.”
Jack groaned with regret. “You’re probably right, but let’s stay like this for a little while longer.”
“Just a little bit. I won’t feel better until your injury is properly cleaned and taken care of. How does it feel by the way?”
“When I wasn’t thinking about it, the wound didn’t bother me. Now it’s throbbing like a son of a bitch.”
“Maybe we should go now.”
“No. I can endure the pain. What I can’t stand is losing this moment with you.”
“If you keep talking like that, you’re going to make me cry.”
“Would that be such a bad thing?”
She sighed. “No, but I was never the emotional type until I met you. Opening up to someone new isn’t easy for me, but I want to be worthy of the love you’ve bestowed on me.”
He kissed her on the tip of her nose. “Likewise. I’ll never hurt you. But you have to promise me, whenever you have any doubts or concerns, you’ll come and talk to me about them, okay?”
“You don’t have to tell me twice.” She raised her head, offering her lips to him which Jack didn’t hesitate to take.

Sydney was so relieved to see the base she almost wept. They hadn’t been able to leave the city that night because of the upheaval. From what Sydney and Jack were able to determine, a lot of civil unrest was going on within the confines of the city. Riots were taking place, law enforcement officers were being attacked, and people were demanding answers. No longer were the citizens willing to be fed the lies they’d been given since the Cyrellians had landed on Earth.
The war had begun.
It had been difficult to navigate their way through the melee with so many people on the streets. But it had drawn the attention away from her and Jack which eventually helped them find their way out of the city.
“I’ve never been happier to be home in my life.” She sighed her relief.
Jack dropped a kiss on the top of her head. “Me too. Everyone will be interested to hear the news we have.”
“I think this may change our plans. With this uprising some of the other leaders might not feel it necessary to go into the city.”
“That might be, but there has to be some kind of organization. There may be pockets of rebellion; however, with their sophisticated technology, the Cyrellians could easily squash them. If we all fight together, though, we could accomplish so much more.”
Sydney shivered at the prospect of the fight, but knew it was necessary to their freedom. “How long do you think it will take to drive them off the planet or at the very least put them somewhere they can never harm anyone again?”
“It could be a matter of days, weeks, or even months. We could be in this for the long haul because there’s no telling what they have in their arsenal. There are more humans than there are Cyrellians, so the more people we can recruit, the better.”
“I guess you’re right. We should probably go inside and take care of your shoulder. The last thing I want is for it to get infected.” They walked the rest of the way to the house hand in hand.

No sooner did they walk through the door than Chase spotted them. His dark eyes widened for a moment in apparent surprise before a wide grin split his face. “Well, I’ll be damned. You’ve made it back in one piece, well, sort of.” He strode toward them and gave Jack a hearty pat on the shoulder. Unfortunately it was the bad one.
“Ouch!” Jack pulled away.
Chase’s brows flew together. “Damn, I’m sorry, man. I was so happy to see you, I forgot about your injury.”
Jack’s lips twisted to a half smile. “I wish I could forget being wounded. I take it one of our team told you what happened.”
Chase rolled his eyes. “Yeah, Bennett, albeit grudgingly. That guy has a major problem.”
Sydney grimaced. “We’ve already determined that, but I guess we’ll have to figure out a way to work
