    Chapter Seventeen

The next several days went by fast. I spent most of it stressed out about Saturday. Was this a date? Oh God, it was, and I was going to meet all his friends. What if they didn’t like me? What if they said something about my job? I began to think it would be best to cancel. I kept going back and forth on it, but even more importantly, I was starting to stress out about what I was going to wear. I needed a dress. Also, I couldn’t help but wonder about his crazy ex. Should I be worried? Obviously, she was out of the picture. I tried not to think about that and focused my thoughts on finding a killer dress instead.
I spent all of Friday morning shopping, trying to find the right dress. I kept coming up with excuses on why they didn’t work—too long, too short, too low cut, wrong color, wrong cut. Nothing seemed to work. I walked through the mall looking in the store windows. I was just about to give up when I saw the most gorgeous dress on a mannequin in a window. It was perfect, black with a matching lace overlay. It was beautiful. It had one sleeve that was all lace and left the other arm bare. I tried it on and it fit as though it was made for me.
By the time I made it home with my dress, I barely had enough time to get ready for work. I hadn’t worked all week and needed a distraction so that I wasn’t sitting at home driving myself crazy with doubt about tomorrow.
I rushed to throw my clothes in my bag, and ran out the door. I sent a quick text to Jade telling her I was on my way, but might be a few minutes late.
I pulled up to Hades and rushed inside, dropping my bag next to Melody who was almost ready.
“There you are. I was starting to wonder if you were going to show up.”
“I know. I was shopping and it took longer than I thought.”
    “Oh, what did you get?”
    “A dress.”
“What’s the occasion?” she asked as she put on a layer of mascara.
    “Oh, nothing special.”
    “Not good enough. Try again.”
“Fine. I have a date, or at least I think it’s a date tomorrow.”
    “Ohhhh! Details, Faith, details.”
    “It’s nothing really.”
“If it was nothing you wouldn’t have bought a new dress. Don’t leave me hanging. Is it with that guy, what was his name…Bryce? He was hot.”
“Yes.” I started with my make-up.
“So, where is he taking you?”
“That’s the thing…he’s taking me to his friend’s wedding.”
“I love weddings! Oh, and all the hot guys who will be there. He had some hot friends.”
“Melody, I’m not going to hit on other guys.”
“Still, I’m kind of jealous. I want to go.” She pouted. “You are going to be hanging out with Mr. Hottie while I am stuck at work with assholes. So not fair.”
I ignored her and finished getting ready for the night. I pulled out one of my favorite outfits.
“I do have a question for you, Melody,” I said, giving her a wicked grin.
“Oh yeah?” She looked straight into the mirror.
    “Yeah. So, who is Gage?”
She paused, freezing in place as she slowly turned to look at me. “What do you mean, who is Gage? ”
“You mentioned his name the other night.”
    “I did?”
“And by the way you are looking at me, I have a feeling I’m on to something.”
“He’s no one. I mean, there isn’t anything to tell, really.” She turned back to look in the mirror. If she didn’t want to tell me I wasn’t going to push her.
I would have to remember to ask her later. I continued getting ready. My first outfit of the night would be booty shorts and a tube top that was black and white plaid. It had ruffles along the edge of the top and bottom of the shorts. I slipped on a black garter. Now I just needed to put on my wig and I would be ready to go. I looked through my bag, pulling everything out and dumping it on the floor.
    “Fuck,” I yelled.
    “What’s
