anything else. Just not one of you. Yet.â
âBut youâre an artist,â Merge said. âAll you have to do is set up and paint.â
âNo. It has to be right. The five of you lovely women are somehow incomplete, and I canât paint you.â
âArtistic registration,â Metria muttered.
He glanced at her. âArtistic what?â
âEnrollment, entrance, ingress, adjustment, dispositionââ
âTemperament?â
âWhatever,â she agreed crossly.
Art nodded. âMaybe so. Itâs ironic, because I really want to paint you, you beautiful creatures, and you are all ready to be painted. But something holds me back.â
âWeâll surely figure it out in due course,â Tiara said.
âI hope so.â He resumed his nature scene.
Astrid sat on a convenient stool, resting, until she saw others looking at her. She glanced downâand realized it was a massive mound of animal dung. She had been gotten by a freshly spread stinking pun.
She quickly changed the subject. âI have something to say that I hope wonât disturb you.â
Mitch smiled. âYour direct glance might disturb us, or your deadly perfume, but not your words.â
âI talked with the Demoness Fornax.â
âThe lady dog who tried to mess us up in her galaxy?â Mitch asked.
âOh, yes,â Kandy said, returning to woman form. âHow did it go?â
âWe have an idea.â
Merge was perplexed. âIsnât Fornax mischief?â
âShe associates with antimatter,â Kandy explained. âShe canât touch anything here without it exploding into energy. Thatâs why she needs an intermediary. Apart from that, sheâs not a bad person. I am negotiating for her with Demon Xanth to arrange the next Demon Wager.â
âI donât trust this,â Ease said. âSheâs a seductive wench.â
âArenât we all,â Kandy said fondly. âWhatâs your idea, Astrid?â
âFornax and I have agreed to be friends. But neither of us knows much about how to do it. So we talked with Wenda Woodwifeâyou know, the âI wood knot dew that to yewâ womanâand she says we should try helping children.â
âWenda does love children,â Pewter said.
âSo our idea is to rescue some children from the future and place them in good adoptive families. But weâll have to take care of them in the interim. Neither Fornax nor I know anything about handling children, so weâll need your help.â
âI donât know a thing about children,â Merge said. âBut it might be good experience for when I find a man and, well, whatever.â She blushed.
âThatâs a good point,â Tiara said. âI feel the same, though I have found my man.â She glanced lovingly at Mitch.
âI have son,â Metria said. âHeâs a nuisance.â
âWell, heâs half demon,â Kandy reminded her.
âTrue. Ordinary children would not be half the perturbation.â
âHalf the what?â
âPlanetary alignment, confusion, devilment, rascality, mischiefââ
âTrouble?â
âWhatever,â the demoness agreed crossly.
Kandy glanced at the men. âYou are oddly silent. Donât you want children?â
âWe hadnât thought of it,â Mitch said. âBut I suppose we could help caretake a few for a while.â
âSo letâs do it,â Kandy said, quite ready to support Astrid and her connection with Fonax.
Thus simply it was decided. âI will see about rescuing them,â Astrid said gratefully. She had feared that it would be more complicated.
Then she contacted the Demoness. âFornax,â she murmured.
âGood enough,â Fornax said.
But something was strange. The others were not moving. They seemed to be frozen in place. âAre they all right?â Astrid
