looking suitably put down. âAnyway, I couldnât care less what photos they take or, for that matter, how they plan to get them. I have an idea of my own thatâll guarantee my winning, and seeing as you promised to help me, youâre part of it.â
As though she didnât hear him, Gloria said. âHere comes Snook and Jars now. Why donât you tell them how youâre going to win. They might be interested to hear.â
Chapter 17
----
âW eâre gonna have a cuppa,â Snook said as soon as he and Jars joined Gloria and Quenton. âWant one?â
âNo thanks,â Quigley said, answering for himself and Gloria. âWeâve got other plans.â
Gloria was clearly confused. Screwing up her face, head tilted, she looked at Quenton. âI donât know anything about plans,â she said.
Snook said, âYeah, Quigley. What plans are you talkinâ about?â
Sticking his chin out defensively, Quenton said, âFor your information, Gloria and I are going to a place you donât know about â where you havenât even been.â Shrugging her shoulders in a I donât know what heâs talking about gesture, Gloria looked at me, then at Snook.
âOh?â Snook said. âYou wouldnât happen to be goinâ downstream to the lagoon, would you? You keep lookinâ in that direction.â
âWhat if I am?â Quenton said, looking caught out. Me and Gloria are going to the far end of the lagoon. I already know the best way to get there too, so you neednât bother following me.â
Snook pointed towards the edge of the camp. âThen youâll be takinâ the old bush road past the camp entrance, down there by those gum trees, the ones that are growinâ practically right across the road.â
Pouting, Quenton said, âSo what if I am? Anyway, you canât come. I thought of it first.â Signalling for Gloria to follow, he turned and walked towards the old bush road.
Gloria, whose eyes were on Snook, as though pleading for him to do, or at least say something, didnât move. She clearly didnât want to go. âLetâs go,â Quigley called back to her, noticing she wasnât following. âWeâll ride our bikes. â
âOkay,â she said her mouth downcast. âIâm coming.â
I had to restrain myself. I wanted to tell Snook to follow her, to at least say something, but, in his usual fashion, he did nothing. I felt like choking him ⦠again.
After theyâd gone, Snook thumped a hand into his fist. âYou know, I really do think thereâs some sort of conspiracy goinâ on. I was gonna suggest we go to the lagoon this arvo, but now Quigleyâs beaten us to it. Plus, that Blowhard fellaâs managed to muck up the gorge trip for us ⦠the animals are probably still in their caves and holes in the ground shiverinâ in their boots. I donât think Iâm meant to win that competition.â
I couldnât help feeling sorry for him, despite his less than cavalier behaviour with Gloria. âCheer up,â I said, clapping him on the back. âThe weekendâs not over yet. You never know whatâll happen next. Something might crop up.â I picked up the water bucket and jiggled it. âItâs empty,â I said, holding it up for Snook to see. âLetâs go fill it up at the creek and when we come back, Iâll make that cuppa. I reckon we could do with one. Câmon, Shadow. You can help.â
Chapter 18
----
O n our way down to the creek, I asked Snook whether he still wanted to go to the lagoon after weâd had our cup of tea.
âNot if Quigleyâs there I donât,â he was quick to reply.
I sighed. It was time to reason with him. âLook, Quenton and Gloria were going to the far end of the lagoon. Thatâs what he told us, but we donât have to go that far. That
